We take guests into the mountains of Kentucky Appalachia by vehicle, guided by local, trained guides, to see and meet the free-roaming horses of Kentucky. Some horses are tame, others are feral. We have given guides extensive safety training and all are familiar with horses. The Guides also provide cultural and historic background of the area during the 30 minute ride up the mountain, and back. While encountering the herds, our guides first make sure there are not too many horses around the vehicle so that no one gets too close. This is usually not the case, as the feral horses do not come close to the vehicle and the tame ones are friendly and don't get too pushy.
The total tour is 3 hours, and we offer a money back guarantee if they do not see any horses. But our guides know the mountains and where the horses hang out, so that has never happened.
35% of the tour fees go towards our hay and vet fund. We pick up horses when they need extra feed to stay healthy or if they are ill or diseased, or if they wander onto private property. All horses are adopted out once they are healthy again.
Our current COVID practices include requiring masks on guides while in the vehicle, combining groups in a vehicle if both groups agree and wear masks, and practicing social distancing while outside of the vehicle. Hand sanitizer is available,

I have owned horses for 50 years, and have lived in Kentucky for 24 years. I am the retired Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Council and have knowledge of appropriate animal welfare practices. I also have a network of horse rescues that we work with. The local guides have the knowledge of the rich culture and history of the area where these horses live. There are 4 part time guides, and one part time Horse Welfare Manager.

Acerca de la organización: Appalachian Horse Project

The Appalachian Horse Project (AHP) addresses the problem of free-roaming horses that are living and breeding in Eastern Kentucky’s mountains, often on former coal producing sites. We provide oversight and management of these herds, caring for sick or injured horses, or horses that wander off the mountains into residential areas. AHP is a 501C3 nonprofit, with a board of equine specialists.

Esta es una experiencia solidaria en la que todo lo que pagas se destina a Appalachian Horse Project.

Donde estarás

The Appalachian area of Southeast Kentucky is filled with beautiful towering mountains, bubbling creeks, limestone outcroppings with small waterfalls, and a diversity of birds and wildlife. We take our visitors to the top of one of the most well known mountains where coal was mined 50 years ago. It has now grown into meadows and woods which are ideal for horses.

Great experience, the horses are super sweet. I would just say make sure you’re not expecting to ride the horses, the activity is just meeting the horses and spending time. Other than that really liked it ☺️

If you love horses, animals, nature and adventure this is the tour for you. Marcia gave us a history lesson of the area on the trip to and from the ridge where the horses are found. Once there we had ample opportunities to see various groups of free range beauties. They came right up to us in the hopes we might have a carrot or two and we obliged. We travelled around and visited dozens of horses. It was amazing!

We loved this experience so much. Meeting the free roaming horses was beyond anything we could have expected. I don’t know how many horses we saw, there were so many. Most were friendly and came to meet us. I couldn’t believe how they’re out on the mountain, everywhere. Our guide Laura obviously loves the horses and the work the organization is doing for them. We cannot want to come back!

The Apalachian Horse Project was our first wild horse experience in Kentucky. We showed up on the wrong day which was out fault. I called the tour quide and she was willing to shift her personal schedule to accomodate us that day. We were grateful as we had a beautiful, long drive in that morning from Berea Kentucky. We are full time RVers and wanted to experience what Kentucky is known for - horses and bourbon! We got in the tour guides vehicle and ride through a hilly, windy road that leads to the magical place these horses call home. The roads are rugged and there was a port-o-john with TP. we saw at least 30+ HORSES of the 500 that roam over 9 counties and we interacted with 12+ horses. Our volunteer tour guide Liz shared some history on the way up and let us take a stroll over one of the swinging bridges that were so pivotal in early times to get across the river on the way down. It is Dec so dressed appropriately. Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to get in and out of the vehicle. Our volunteer guide knew many of the horses and they enjoyed her treats. I took my big camera as well as my phone and captured many great moments with the horses. I was able to get close enough to help get a tangled branch of one of the mares maines. She was beautiful! What a treat to experience these horses and the volunteers that care so much. An RV campground is in the future. Warm regards Liz!

Could not recommend this experience more. Marcia was a kind and knowledgeable guide that shared a lot of local history. We look forward to taking the tour again!

This was a truly wonderful experience! Not only was it great to see the horses roaming free and feed them treats but learning the history of the area was fascinating!!!
