On horseback you will be guided by a 4th generation rancher through sections of Chihuahuan Desert in Far West Texas. This tour offers a rare opportunity to visit a 3,200 acre private ranch, operational for over 100 years.
On this 1/2 day long tour, we will meet at the ranch gate where I will lead you to parking and the horse pens. At the pens you will get acquainted with my 3 seasoned quarter horses: Cactus Jake, Seis, and Flash. Once acquainted you will have a basic riding lesson before we head off to the prehistoric Kockernot Mesa trail on horseback.
This trail originally carved out by Native Americans hundreds of years ago and in more recent times by the cavalry during the civil war will be our gateway to learning about the history that has transpired in this area how the land has been used in the past thru present.
We will break for a small, provided snack before we head up the winding hillside path to our destination of several Native American sites. Once near the site locations we will dismount to wander off the beaten path on foot. As you gaze upon these prehistoric sites, you are welcome to collect rocks such as geodes and flint, take photos and look for arrowheads. Once we have taken in all the sites we will remount and head back to the pens for the closing of our trip.
Before we say goodbye, I will be happy to answer questions about the land and its history.

Texas native, I moved to this area after the Marines and fell in love with the History and Topography. With a degree in Education and Coaching from the local Sul Ross University, I taught in this beautiful region for several years.
While retired from formal teaching my passions have never changed. I formed West Texas Adventures, to offer others an authentic experience of West Texas based upon the history of the land, the community and the environment. I promise my guides and I will coach you through an authentic experience that will directly connect you to the region.

We really enjoyed this experience, the horses were great (even for beginners) and the history of the land was told in an engaging and interesting way. The family are engaging hosts, and very personable. This really is a "can't miss" opportunity if you're in the area and interested in horses and/or history from the neolithic to the recent!

Such a fun, beautiful and peaceful outing. The horses were sweet and super easy to ride. Jim (our horseman) was very knowledgeable and super nice! 100% would do it again next time we’re in West TX!

If you are finding yourself wondering, "what is it that they do on these ranches?" as you fly down 118, then this experience is not to be missed! 3 hours with a super knowledgeable, well versed, humble Texas storyteller will teach you more about the inner workings of ranch work than you thought there was to know. I feel like i got more out of this 3 hours than I did out of three intro courses in college (geology, rangeland ecology, and Texas history). Plus, horses and trails and rocks and just a really awesome time. We were a bit unlucky with the weather (was over 30mph winds with gusts over 50) so we didn't ride horses. Instead, we got a truck tour of the whole ranch, seeing the land and the work. Vance was super patient with our 1000 (probably more) questions about everything. Again, if you want to know about the land you're driving on and driving by, this is what you need to do to feel like you know at least a little bit of something. Would do this again.

What an amazing experience! The two of us had an absolute blast on the horses, talking with Jim, and learning all about horses, the land, and the history of the area. It was truly a first-class experience. The horses were gentle.. Jim clearly loved them, knew them, and knew how to teach us about riding, and we enjoyed every second of our adventure! Thank you!!!

Jim’s tour of his family’s property was amazing! Saying he’s a local is an understatement- his ancestors were part of the Alamo! He’s a wealth of knowledge about his craft, and the history of the area and his property. We spent the morning riding on the property, on and off the trail, talking and looking at Native American artifacts throughout the ranch. I’m not an advanced rider and Jim was an expert at getting everything fitted. Pre-booking they were very communicative and made sure I was all set for my visit (his family’s ranch doesn’t have cell service, but he explained everything in detail and was waiting right at the gate for me. Would highly recommend if you’re looking for a unique, non-touristy experience. Note: wear sunscreen and bring a hat!
