it's simply fantastic gourmet sandwiches which are a challenge to eat because they are so big. The price is quite reasonable. Our favorites are the Vegetarian Club and the Portobello (huge mushroom) Burger with Blackberry Malt to drink. It's right there at the Shattuck Ave. Gourmet Ghetto on Cedar.

Well, it's one of the country's top restaurants run by world renown chef, Alice Waters. Reservations (way in advance) are required along with MONEY. But the lunch menu is not so pricey (as the dinner) and they accept walk-ins. Just call first to find out the lay of the land on the day you want to do lunch.

A Great Breakfast place. Only open until about 2 pm with great omelettes, pancakes, potatoes, etc. All kinds of interesting specials every week. Not touristy. One has to know about this place.

I go there for breakfast, but it's open all day. The problem is the enormous size of the portions which lead to enormous waistlines. Food is great, prices are good, parking right there in the lot. Take the family. For something more gourmet go about a 1/2 mile to my secret spot at the Doyle Street Cafe.

At the beginning or the end depending on your perspective of the 4th Street Gourmet Ghetto is this coffee shop where one can pick the artisan beans, have them roasted, ground, and brewed before you while you surf on their wireless waiting, maybe munching one of their goodies. You can also just get the already brewed selection of coffees, cheaper. Outside lovely seating. This place gives you the aura of the true coffee aficionado. You out to try it at least once in a lifetime.

Not just sightseeing, but lots of small shops catering to tourists. You cannot come to San Francisco without going to China Town. Just get off at the Montgomery Street or Powell Street Bart Stations and ASK where it is. The arched gate entrance is right by Union Square A couple of blocks away. Wander around. If you go off on a side street you can find super cheap good Chinese restaurants with only menus in Chinese. Ask what you are ordering. Take the family. This you can afford. If you don't see tourists inside, that is your place.

It's a great walking and hiking park. Skyline Gate is a parking/ staging area for the wonderful redwood tree lined trails. From easy walking to more challenging hiking depending on what you want to do. Maps and water are at the trail head. I would suggest the main middle trail (Stream Trail) which goes down in the little redwood valley where you are covered in redwoods walking next to a small stream. Unbelievable in an urban area that there is this quite large area devoted to a regional park.

It's famous, it's beautiful, and there is a great Segway Tour of the place. Inside is the Botanical Garden, the de Young Museum, the Academy of Sciences, and the Japanese Tea Garden and just a huge urban green space. Do not come to the SF Bay Area with seeing All of them. I would get on a Hop On Hop Off Bus from downtown San Francisco and get there.

Arts & Culture

I love this place. It is right across from the Academy of Sciences so sometimes I do both at a shot. Great exhibitions. They follow the museum trend of having a live mixer happening on certain nights where there is music, dance, alcohol and other people looking for a good time with people who are a bit cultured. Here is their officail spiel 'Friday Nights at the de Young programs are after-hours art "happenings" that include a mix of live music, dance and theater performances, film screenings, panel discussions, lectures, artist demonstrations, hands-on art activities, and exhibition tours. Local artists conduct drop-in workshops, debut new commissions, display their art in the Kimball Education Gallery, and take part in conversations about the creative process. The café offers a special Friday Night menu and specialty cocktails, and the observation tower is open until 8 pm. Artist Fellows, Artists-in-Residence, curators, scholars, and arts educators all play an active role in making Friday Nights an engaging museum experience for all'.

This is the place to bring your children although it is pricey. It is the place to bring yourself. Planetarium, Aquarium, multi-floor in-the-round walkway through a Rain Forest with beautiful butteries fluttering. What's not to like. All included in the cost. Nice cafeteria. Expensive lower restaurant.

Shopping

Just get on BART and get off at Powell Street. Walk up, down, across the street and really almost anyway around and there is fabulous SHOPPING. Hop on a Cable Car there and go across breathtaking San Francisco hills to Ghiradelli Square and the Embarcadero . Walk along there for some great restaurants and some cheesy tee shirts. Be sure to walk to Pier 39 for more fabulous shopping and food.

You can get some Bubba Gumps Shrimp or eat in one of the other wonderful restaurants in this shopping area. I always get the clam chowder in a bread bowl which is available from several sources. Lots of little stores and a visual treat at Christmas time with all the decorations.

This is called the 4th St Gourmet Ghetto because it has gourmet eateries. But it has lots of nice interesting shops including CB2, Crate and Barrel Outlet, Anthropologie, Design Within Reach, the Pasta Shop, Stained Glass Garden, East Bay Vivarium, Discovery Channel Store, Z Gallerie, Sur La Table and too many others to mention here. Go and walk it. It's very easy to do so. Many more shops than the Shattuck Gourmet Ghetto and less Cal Students (maybe).

This is a Safeway that is competing with Whole Foods and the upscale Andronico's Market just down the block. Great parking. Has a cafe. They are apart of the Shattuck Gourmet Ghetto Scene. I would suggest parking there and walking the Scene from here because on-street parking in the area is not pretty.

Sitting there in the heart of the Shattuck Ave Gourmet Ghetto is an upscale supermarket with aspirations to be Whole Foods. So of course, it has a bakery, cafe, etc. Can't park there to cruise the Ghetto because they have a watch guy lurking. Too bad because it is right across the street from my favorite restaurant, Barney's. When I don't have immediate Parking Karma I just go a couple of blocks to the Safeway on Shattuck that has ample underground and street level parking and no person checking on your car - yet.

Mostly fresh fruits and veggies with bins of beans, nuts, grains, etc. Not a general purpose store. Very popular and crowded. You need good parking Karma to find a spot on the block or in the parking lot. OR just go a couple blocks away on Sacramento and there is plenty to choose from. Across from Berkeley Horticultural Nursery which is fun to wander through and smell the plants.
