Drinks & Nightlife

Named the best pub in Ireland by the Irish Times in 2015. A unique pub, only opens on Thursday nights, located in a traditional farmhouse kitchen in the middle of the Tipperary countryside. Run by Jim and Kae Ryan and their 5 daughters. Local musicians turn up with their instruments and the night just takes off. If you play an instrument or sing, you will be invited to join in - otherwise just soak up the atmosphere. There are no fancy beers and cocktails here, just draft Guinness, large bottles of Smithwicks ale, Bulmer's cider, whiskey, vodka and soft drinks. For directions enter "Jim o' The Mills", in Google Maps, or the Eircode "E41 D3T8" in other navigation tools. Eircode: E41 D3T8 20 mins by car from Bluebell Cottage

Nenagh Castle is Nenagh's oldest building, and its construction in the 13th century laid the foundation for the development of the town. Theobald FitzWalter, whose successors would become Earls and Dukes of Ormond, built the castle, and upon its completion c.1220 it served as the main seat of the Butler family until 1391. The castle boasts the finest cylindrical keep in Ireland. The keep features four storeys, and has a 101 step stone spiral (steep and narrow) staircase to the top, where you have great views across Nenagh, and the surrounding countryside. Access to the tower is through a passageway within the base of the wall. This has low head room, so visitors will need to stoop to avoid hitting the stone above. There are interpretation panels on each floor of the castle which allow for self-guiding. Mary & Gordon like to visit the attached small but peaceful walled garden, and just around the corner is Steeples Cafe - one of our favourite cafe's in Nenagh. Hours: April -October Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 1pm & 2-4.30pm (last admission at 3.45pm) Winter Opening Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 2-3pm Free admission Eircode: E45 YP80 (entrance is on O’Rahilly Street). One of the top tourist attractions in Ireland. Fully restored 1425 medieval castle, attached to a charming folk village with old-Irish shops, school, postoffice and pet farm. For a full experience try the evening 'Medieval Banquet' (at 17:30 or 20:45 - reservations necessary). Tours of the mill and gardens with the owners Irene and Marcus Sweeney are packed full of information - the stream powering the mill is actually the border between counties Tipperary and Offaly, so the site spans both counties! The architectural and historical artifacts bring to life the mill's origins and history, and the gardens make for a joyful visit. Distinctive local hill with a gap it in - legend says the devil took a bite out of the hill here and spat it out at Cashel, on which stands the Rock of Cashel. There's a nice 5km loop walk, with 200m ascent, through forest and hillside paths. The loop does not include the summit, so add on the 10min short spur to the cross at the top for extensive views across Tipperary - including the mountains of Slievenamon, the Galtees and the Knockmeealdowns to the South, and Lough (lake) Derg to the West. Directions: search Google Maps for "Devil's Bit Car Park" Only 15 mins drive from Bluebell Cottage.
