Great to combine with a day out in Amble Warkworth has one of our favorite castle ruins, hire a audio guide to find out all the history of this beautiful historic castle. Warkworth village is beautiful too with river running through and a great range of pubs - try The Masons Arms for great cosy interior and food!

A great local day out, visit Alnwick Castle a fully used and functioning castle that is also open to the public. Any Harry Potter fans will love it here, as this was the location for many scenes in the Harry Potter Movies including the famous Quidditch pitch.
Also well worth a visit is the Alnwick Gardens, a great family favorite - dont forget to visit the amazing Treehouse with its connecting rope bridges. Within the Treehouse is a fantastic restaurant booking ahead is advised!

This is a beautiful city with lots to see and, easily accessible via metro from Whitley Bay. My top highlights to see would be firstly The Quayside, see the cities many famous bridges and walk over the Millenium bridge to Gateshead where you can see a live music event or just have a coffee.
From there we have a choice of great Museums and Art Galleries. The Baltic is fantastic and just asks for a donation. It might be worth checking ahead to see what exhibitions are on?
Other free museums (donations welcome) are The Discovery Museum and The Great North Museum both great ones for kids. The Center for life (if there is a specific exhibition you fancy) is fantastic but it is an expensive day out so if there is no exhibition I'd hold off heading there.
One of the greatest things about Newcastle is its Architecture - walk from The Quayside up Dean Street to Grey Street, probably Newcastle's most famous street for its Architecture. From here you can see Greys Monument (check with the tourist board as you you occasionally book onto tours to climb to the top!)
Everything you could expect from a city is here - shops, restaurants, bars - you name it! One of the most beautiful bars is The Botanist hidden away behind Waterstones on Blackett Street or try the brand new 'Leila Lilys'. But if you fancy something a little more of the beaten track head to Horticulture tucked away on Market Lane just off Pilgrim Street. Or head to the outskirts of the city to 'The Holy Hobo' and see if you can gain the password to the secret bar! If your up for some dancing cross the street for live music and more cocktails at 'As You Like It'.
For a bite to eat the food court in Fenwicks if fab for a quick bite on the go, I'm a big fan of 'The Fat Hippo' on Shakespeare Street which has great Burgers! or if I'm feeling healthy i'll go for 'The Naked Deli' on Grey Street. A hidden gem if you fancy something special is 'Blackfriars' tucked away in old 16th Century Friary on Friar street. The Michelin recommended restaurant wont dissapoint - booking necessary.
Finally don't miss out on a few of my favorites

- The Phil and Lit Library a gorgeous and historic library - it feel's like your in hogwarts!

Sightseeing
if you're feeling energetic you can do a lovely walk straight from 209 Park View all the way to the lighthouse (and up it) along the beach if the tide is out. You can only access the lighthouse at low tide so do check the tide times for getting on - and off!! The are a lot of steps up and fairly steep at top so kids might need a little help. However the views at the top are just fantastic.

Saint Mary's Island Causewayif you're feeling energetic you can do a lovely walk straight from 209 Park View all the way to the lighthouse (and up it) along the beach if the tide is out. With 600 acres of gardens, woodland and countryside – perfect for wildlife spotting. Highlights include a Neo-classical chapel, restored stable block and grand ruin. There are plenty of picnic spots or a great cafe for food. Kids will love the Strawberry Castle play area.

Great day out for the family - Go back in time in the living open air museum reliving the story of the North East through the 1820's, 1900's, 1940s & 50's.
We particularly like to take a picnic and eat up by the farm.

Jesmond Dene is a beautiful spot around 15/20 minutes from Whitley Bay by car. Jesmond Dene is a unique haven of peace and tranquility. It is a narrow wooded valley that follows the river Ouseburn between South Gosforth and Jesmond Vale and home to a lot of wildlife, notably the Kingfisher, the Red Squirrel and many woodland birds.
You will find open fields for picnics, waterfalls, bridges and a variety of paths for walks. Their is a visitor center and cafe, a park for little ones and a pets corner with pigs, goats, rabbits and a variety of birds that kids will love. During the summer there is also a Thomas Train ride that loops around the park.
