The western end of Oak Island has gorgeous sunsets, many coastal birds, a great wide beach to sunbathers or walk along, and has a view of nearby Holden Beach (the next beach). One can walk around the end of the island on a wider sandy beach, ending up in a calm inlet where it is much easier to kayak or paddleboard than in the ocean. A helpful feature are the portojohns. Public free parking.

This is the closest public beach access to the apt., .5 mile with a nice walk by sidewalk along E. Oak Island St. and then on SE 40th Street along Davis Canal. Coastal birds are often fishing in the canal. There are MANY public access points to the ocean, usually with free parking. Dont park in restricted marked spots, or with your tires on the road if you park on grass/side of road.

Neighborhoods

You'll want to spend an afternoon in Southport, a nearby historic coastal town on the Cape Fear River, near where it feeds into the Atlantic. Many love the quaint old houses, some from late 1700s, and some enjoy shopping in the many quaint shops. Besides being a beautiful small town, you can catch the ferry to Bald Head Island or Fort Fisher/Carolina Beach in Southport. Many nice seafood restaurants on the water with great views, or in town. Best view of sunset is at American Fish Company, a private outdoor bar which only costs $1 to join! Southport doesn't really have a beach, but you might spot an enormous cargo ship passing by, from China, the middle east, etc.
