A short walk down steep cliffs will bring you to the beach, which is clean, safe and sandy and offers pleasant views of the Isle of Wight. The sandy beach with shingle is ideal for body boarding and bathing and there is a RNLI Lifeguard service during July and August. There is a pay and display car park at Highcliffe Cliff Top, where charges apply between April and September. There are also toilet and café facilities on the cliff top. There is no disabled access to the beach due to a series of steep, gravel paths. The beach is close to Christchurch Coastal Path which runs the full length of the Christchurch coastline from Chewton Bunny to Mudeford Quay. Directions from the house. You can either drive to the carpark or walk. Left from the house to Western Avenue to the end. Right onto Marine Drive West and through the gate into Naish Holiday camp. (check gate closing times) Keep the sea side of the buildings until almost to the tree-line. Then cut through onto a road or path until you see a sign and path for residents to use to access the beach. The path leads through the trees, downhill and into an open space. Follow the open space towards the sea; right turn for the Highcliffe Beach.

On the banks of the Beaulieu River, in the heart of the New Forest, you will find the peaceful haven of Buckler's Hard which remains untouched by the passage of time. Once a thriving shipbuilding village where ships for Nelson's fleet at Trafalgar were built, now Buckler's Hard is a tranquil haven, perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of modern life. Discover the history of the village in the Maritime Museum, take a step inside a historic shipwright's cottage, or simply amble down the high street to watch the boats sailing by on the Beaulieu River, where you can catch a river cruise from Easter to September. There plenty for everyone to do here; history and hand’s on experiences too. A walk along the river, through the woodland from Beaulieu to the Hard is a leisurely 2-mile walk (one way).

The mound-top keep or great tower here was part of a large Norman castle that once dominated the town of Christchurch in Dorset. Nearby is the 12th century riverside chamber block known as the Norman House, one of the few remaining examples of domestic Norman architecture in England. Built in about 1160, it provided grand and comfortable living quarters for the lord of Christchurch. The tall circular Norman chimney is a particularly rare survival. Two parts of Christchurch Castle survive – a typical early 12th-century motte-and-bailey castle, and a chamber block now known as the Norman House. The area between them, now a bowling green, was once the defended courtyard or bailey of the castle, and would have been filled with buildings. Begun in 1100 under the de Redvers family, the castle passed to the Crown in 1293, and was attacked during the Civil War by Parliamentarian troops before being dismantled in 1651. The Norman House is one of the few surviving examples of Norman domestic architecture in England. Visitors can visit anytime in daylight hours. A dirt path runs around the base of the keep, suitable for buggies and wheelchairs. There is a steep climb up to the remains for those who wish to explore further. There is a charged car park within three-minute walk of the site.

Christchurch Priory is said to be the longest church in England, measuring 95 metres and the building dates back to 1094. The priory consists of 24 secular canons and it was recorded in the Domesday book back in the eleventh century. It was probably built on the site of a much earlier church. Building started in 1094 and took may years and families to what you see today was completed in 1530. In 1999 a window celebrating theine hundredth anniversary of Christchurch Priory was installed. It shows a starry night dominated by a cross, which is surrounded by a pattern of circles to symbolise eternity and perfection. The Priory has a ring of 12 bells plus a 6th flat. The Bells are rung twice on Sundays and Monday nights and for extra services. They are in the Key of D and the Tenor (largest) weighs 30cwt (1½ Tons). The two oldest bells in the ring were cast in 1376.

Highcliffe Castle is not only a beautiful and historical building, but the surrounding grounds are perfect for a relaxing stroll or a family picnic on the lawns. There is direct access to both a wonderful sandy beach and the unspoilt nature reserve of nearby Steamer Point. The Castle has been described as arguably the most important surviving house of the Romantic and Picturesque style of architecture. It is a grade 1 listed building built mainly between 1831 and 1836 by Lord Stuart de Rothesay. The magnificent building, once lavishly furnished in the 18th century French style, remained a family home until the 1950’s. Whilst two fires destroyed the rich interiors in the 1960’s, the Castle’s renovated exterior is testimony to the remarkable skills of craftsmen and women who carried out a huge repair and conservation programme in the 1990’s. Entrance fee for the castle and free to view the grounds. Car park charges apply.

Burley is a typical village with tea rooms, gift shops, art galleries - even a cider farm! Oozing old world charm, with ponies and cattle roaming around the village and pretty thatched cottages, Burley has remained untouched by time. Here you will find a traditional butcher, village stores and cosy inns. Don’t forget to look out for the New Forest ponies and cattle as they roam freely around the village. Although these animals might look and act wild, they are in fact all owned by locals using their commoner’s rights. There is a cycle hire shop in the village as well as a golf course and a riding school. Another treat would be to visit the famous Burley Fudge shop. A good day out in the New Forest is Hurst Castle, an artillery fortress built by Henry VIII between 1541 and 1544. The lighthouse was built between 1865 and 1867 and is still in use today to guide vessels into the western end of the Solent. There is plenty of open space to explore and fantastic views of the Isle of Wight. You can either walk along the spit for 1.5 miles from the carpark at Keyhaven or take the ferry (charges apply) depending on the amount of time you have to spare. The castle has a colourful history and it offers visitors an audio tour to navigate the site. (entry fee applies)
