A modern food market housing several restaurants, varying in cuisine from Vietnamese Street Food to ‘funky’ hot dogs. Make sure you come here with a empty stomach so you can enjoy nibbles from the stalls. If you don’t want to stay and eat at one of the crowded tables, you’re in luck, as most of the stalls offer take out. Here you can also find antique markets during the weekend, a brilliant souvenir shop and a art-house cinema.

This huge café is built inside of a former cinema complex that was constructed in the 1920s on western border of de Pijp. Its interior covers several floors, and large sections of the café are perched on top mezzanines that are stacked above its main bar. Albert Cuyp Markt is only a few blocks away, and CT Coffee & Coconuts is a fantastic stopping-off point for visitors who are exploring Amsterdam’s trendy, southern neighborhoods.

Despite its many competitors, Pllek might be the coolest restaurant and bar in Amsterdam-Noord. From a distance Pllek resembles a large collection of shipping containers, and blends in perfectly with NDSM-werf’s industrial surroundings. A golden riverside beach is hidden behind this metal façade, complete with deck-chairs, picnics tables and ultra-comfy beanbags. It is always worth checking out Pllek’s website before heading over the IJ, as they often organise open-air film nights.

A newer Amsterdam park, Westerpark used to be the property of the Wester Gasfabriek, a coal-fired gas power plant. After its closure in the late 1960s, the area lay derelict for years and became a not-so-nice place to be. In the 1990s squatters and artists moved in, followed by the city of Amsterdam. They decided to clean up the pollution and make a lovely park on the property, and they did an amazing job! The redevelopment has given the area a great gentrification boost and brought a lot of life to the neighborhood.

The Dutch have been cultivating and exporting flowers for generations and have created an impressive horticultural industry that is recognized throughout the world. In 1862 Amsterdam’s municipality founded the Bloemenmarkt – a floating flower market that is anchored to the banks of Singel canal. Over 15 vendors sell their leafy products from these platforms and will happily vacuum pack seeds and bulbs for air transport.
