Food Scene

This cosy Bristol favourite is literally metres from the door. Its open for lunch and dinner (check the website for the latter) but it is the delicious breakfasts for which it's famous... and most convenient for our house, especially when you need a 'restorative' start to the day.

Great, authentic Italian food in a typically laid back and low-key Bristol venue. Easy to miss if you stick to the main drag of Stokes Croft, but one of our favourites nearby for a delicious and relaxed evening meal.

A delicious and very, very popular burger and chips takeaway (technically you can eat in but the chance of getting 1 of the 3 seats is low). They do dirty burgers and fries the RIGHT way. It might seem a touch expensive, and you might be forgiven for thinking it's not worth the very long wait (an hour or longer) but indicate the quality and it's popularity. And you can pop back to the house while you wait.

This is a truly unique and very special, if little unusual, modern Korean restaurant beloved of those who are lucky enough to discover it. It only seats 10 or so people, so you'll need to book. And you get what you're given (taking into account any allergies or dietary prefs) and you share it with the others in your party. They publish their evening offering on Twitter everyday, so have a look. Beautiful food and service, yet affordable and BYO too, which is a bonus. Don't be put off by the slightly unpromising but fast improving location.

This a useful, if a little expensive farm shop. But we love it for the sandwiches at lunchtime and deli counter offerings, particularly the massive onion bhajis. The builders who built the house were ADDICTED to the tofu satay sandwiches, which would convert even diehard tofu skeptics.

This was the original branch of a small, and much loved modern Indian chain in Bristol. Their food is fresh and original, not at all like your usual UK Indian restaurant. It's nice place to eat-in (reservation advisable) but they also do an eco-takeaway for 2 via a Tiffin tin (which you'll find in the house), with rice, dal and 2 currys in each compartment.

Drinks & Nightlife

Airbnb doesn't provide an option for 'pub', but that's exactly what this is, and an excellent one too. Its worn in and cosy, and owned by a lovely Bristol brewery, but they always stock at least 5 other 'guest ales'. It gets busy on Friday/Saturday nights. But there's always somewhere to lean (and if you really can't get in, there's another nice and much quieter pub on the same street, if you head back towards the house). They often have interesting 'kitchen takeovers', so worth a look if you're after food. Book if you want their 'late Sunday Roast' (although there are better ones in Bristol).

This is a fantastic and hugely popular independent venue that's true to the Bristol, and Stokes Croft spirit. Late on Friday and Saturday evenings, there's a queue to get in, but you can stroll in the rest of the time. Indeed its open all day, and is a nice place to work with a coffee. They have interesting live music or DJs most nights, and they do good food too.

Essentials

This is a fantastic, authentic and convenient Italian grocers. They import all their stuff from Italy themselves each week, from pasta (every kind) to tinned tomatoes and fresh ingredients. Best of all, it's really good value, including the wine. If you're staying PLEASE go in here. We guarantee you won't come out empty-handed.

We have a washer/dryer in the house, but if you're too busy, this is very close by and a good value laundrette. You can drop your stuff round for them to do if you're busy too. In fact, it's also a very nice café, with a computer for internet use and they offer printing! So very handy to have nearby.

Open early till late, this is a really friendly and convenient off-licence. It really is surprising just how much stock these guys have. From grocery essentials, to alcohol, firelighters, loo roll etc etc. Also, go past the till to the back to find 'world food' and fresh groceries too.

Bakers, butchers, grocers, a fishmonger etc etc. This is one of the UK's best independent high streets. If you're here for a little longer, we recommend you do your shopping here. Most of the best shops are down our end, and there's lots of good cafés to refuel along the way.

A Bristol institution that's worth that short walk. It's a pay-by-weight, dry food shop, where you 'scoop your own' cereal, sweets, flour, sugar, obscure spices... basically everything and anything.

Entertainment & Activities

Another uniquely Bristolian institution. This tiny, fiercely independent single screen 'microplex' cinema and music venue has refurbed seats from a Victorian cinema, make their own cola and was famously saved from closure by Banksy himself. Check what's showing online (https://cubecinema.com/) and books if you're interested. Tickets are really cheap. Make sure you know where you're going before you set out, you're unlikely to stumble upon it by chance.

Sightseeing

This iconic Brunel bridge is worth a look, at any time, but maybe at its best at night. If you go on foot, take a walk through Bristol's most exclusive, and undeniably lovely neighbourhood of Clifton village. There's lots of nice places to eat and drink round here. Although, dare I say, with not quite the same independent feel as those we've recommended near the house.

Parks & Nature

This is a huge area of parkland, mostly wide open grassland, interspersed with scrubby woodland. It's very popular, but never crowded, with runners, fitness classes and impromptu football and frisbee games. Its bordered to the West by the stunning and still quite wild Avon gorge. There's two great viewing points, with an ice cream van (or two) in the summer.
