Qué harás

This class is an introduction to alternative photography. Guests will learn how to make two types of alternative photographic prints: Cyanotype, and Argyrotype
The negatives will be created from either plants from the garden or from digital photos.
After introductions, we will look at examples of prints done by former students. We’ll then take a tour of the two-acre property. Guests will be encouraged to collect leaves, flowers etc. or to take digital pictures that will later be used to create the negatives.
The next step will be for guests to coat their own alternative photographic paper. While the paper dries, they will create the negatives.
Finally, we will expose, wash, and fix the prints.
I will also teach by demonstration the basic principles of the chemistry behind these processes. No prior knowledge of chemistry is needed. Don’t worry, no quizzes!
Guests will leave with at least two vintage style prints, an appreciation for alternative photographic processes and an understanding of the underlying chemistry. And it’s my hope that they will experience renewal through doing creative work in the beautiful setting of Sonoma Mountain.
Bring lunch or dinner: you will be able to stay after the workshop and enjoy it by the pond or in the shaded garden.

I am a recently retired Chemistry and Practical Arts teacher. After teaching high school for 28 years my husband and I decided to move to Sonoma Mountain and develop a property there. We built a house and rehabilitated the land with mostly native plants and trees. There is also a productive vegetable garden, a fruit orchard, and a variety of ethnobotanical plants. It’s a delightful work in progress.
I was lucky to teach at the San Francisco Waldorf High School where science and arts are often taught together, and I discovered alternative photographic processes. I found that doing this work engaged the students to such degree that they wanted to know the chemistry!
Beyond school, I was honored to be invited to teach a hands-on Cyanotype workshop at the Exploratorium in San Francisco.

My 13 year old daughter and I really enjoyed this experience and came home with several personal works of art to hang in our home. Caroline is a great instructor and took us through the whole process. It was very creative and fun. Highly recommend!
