At just 2 hours from Playa del Carmen, the Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) of Valladolid in Yucatán is one of those places in which time goes slowly,. This town still emanates the ancient magic of the Mayan inhabitants. Afternoons are made for wandering around its barrios full of colors, with its enormous houses that seem to talk about important moments in the history of the country, like the War of the Castes, The Colony and The Mexican Revolution. Cenotes, Ruins and museums. Worth it TO VISIT 100%

Called the City of Hills and located right in the middle of the Yucatán Peninsula, Izamal may be the oldest city in Yucatán. Izamal was conquered by the Spaniards, and the monks in their eagerness to convert the Indians to Catholicism gave the city its religious distinction. To this day, Izamal’s people are very devoted to the Immaculate Virgin. The most important thing to see here is the Franciscan convent that was built over one of the Maya pyramids. This convent is also famous for the monk Fray Diego de Landa, its founder, who burned all the Indian scripts, and then, feeling remorse for what he had done, tried to rewrite all he could remember of the ways of the Maya. It is here where Pope John Paul visited in 1993. This visit has been one of Izamal’s claims to fame ever since, and is commemorated by a statue of the Pope in the convent courtyard. Inside the church itself, you will see the beautifully restored altarpiece, the stained-glass window of St. Francis of Asissi, and many statues along the walls. The second floor is where the statue of Our Lady of Izamal, Queen and Patron Saint of Yucatán, is housed. Note all the gold-leaf paint, crystal chandeliers, flowers and elegantly painted walls. A small church store with postcards and religious souvenirs is on the first floor. Picture Perfect Izamal is a jewel of a colonial city, with almost all the buildings painted an egg-yolk yellow. Cobblestone streets and colonial lampposts complete the scenery. Clean, peaceful and quaint, this is a great town to stroll through. There are Maya pyramids, colonial-style buildings, parks and plazas, horses and buggies, and lots of people-watching. Discover this Magical Town in Quintana Roo When you arrive at the Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) of Bacalar, you get the sensation that you're seeing an optical illusion created by myriad flashes of blue water, from the deepest shade of blue to turquoise and crystalline. However, it is not a mirage but a reality: it is, in fact, the Laguna de los Siete Colores (Lagoon of Seven Colors), a tourist attraction that invites you to discover Bacalar. Moreover, it is located only 40 minutes away from Chetumal, the capital of the state of Quintana Roo. We owe this gift of nature to seven cenotes (deep natural wells or sinkholes) distributed along the Bacalar Lagoon's 43 km (26.7 mi) of shoreline. Depending on the time of day, sunlight illuminates the entrances to the underground caves, allowing travelers to appreciate the range of colors, as well as their varied depths. The cenotes feature several activities, such as kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving, that allow you to explore these aquatic labyrinths. Unmissable experiences in Bacalar Another way to enjoy the nature that surrounds this Caribbean Magical Town is by staying in one of the lagoonside hotels in Bacalar. Most of them are ideal for a romantic weekend getaway or to forget about the hustle and bustle of the city. Its main features are the hammocks and swings suspended over the lagoon. You can't say you've visited Bacalar until you've walked through its downtown area. Here, you will find the San Felipe Fort, which protected the Mayan community from pirate invasions in ancient times. Visit its museum and walk along with the vestiges of 11 cannons. Here, you will have access to unique views of the Pueblo Mágico of Bacalar to immortalize in pictures. Take advantage of your time here by riding bicycles around the streets and sitting down for a cold beer accompanied by fresh seafood tacos. The Pueblo Mágico of Bacalar is located very close to the Riviera Maya and approximately a four-hour drive from Cancún.

Consejos para la ciudad

Formas de ahorrar

Negocios locales
