A place which is important for Podgorica is Duklja (ruins left from the ancient city). Doclea was originally the name of the Roman city, built by Roman Emperor Diocletian, who hailed from this region of Roman Dalmatia. The town was situated ca. 3 km north from present-day Podgorica, Montenegro's capital. The Illyrian Docleatae, which were later Romanized, inhabiting the area derived their name from the city.

Medun is a medieval fortress on a hill that was the acropolis of a larger Illyrian city, a settlement of the Illyrian tribe Labeati, 13 km northeast of Podgorica, in Kuci. From the Illyrian period there are steps in the rocks of the hill on all sides, one part of the ramparts on the west side later rebuilt by a medieval wall, two burials in the rock on the road between the lower and upper town, where the Illyrians performed religious rites related to snake worship. In front of the church of Sv. Archdeacon Stefan, built on the foundations of the elder, is the tomb of Duke Marko Miljanov, a Montenegrin hero and writer. Below the fortification is the house of Marko Miljanov, today a very interesting museum.

The hill after which Podgorica got its name. For locals, it is a favorite place for walking and recreation. The park has an adventure park for children and adults as well as a small Mediterranean botanical garden. If you climb to the top of the hill you can see the whole city nicely. At the entrance to the park is a small church of St. George.

Virpazar is a fairytale place at the crossroads where many different paths intertwine. In that area, guests are waiting for what they need most: a fountain with spring water, the shade of old and tall plane trees, organic food and friendly hosts. The settlement was formed at the confluence of the rivers Orahovštica and Crmnica. By merging, they build a spring and create the river Virštica, which flows into Lake Skadar. Virpazar also has three stone bridges, sung in old folk songs. The famous picnic area is the main transit station for cruising the largest lake in the Balkans and for visiting cultural and historical monuments, monasteries and fortifications concentrated on picturesque islands called gorice. Sandy beaches, authentic rural architecture and vineyards are an integral part of the landscape, offering visitors a rich table of fresh lake fish and high quality Crmnica wines. On the hill above Virpazor are the remains of a fortified Besac, built by the Turks.

A small town on the same river is one of the most beautiful smaller towns in Montenegro. The river Crnojevića is easily accessible from the main road Podgorica-Cetinje. Remains of historical buildings from the time of Ivan Crnojević have been preserved in the place itself, such as the basement of a long-destroyed building, which is connected to the work of the so-called Obodske štamparije, where the first Cyrillic book "Oktoih prvolasnik" was printed in 1494. Enjoying a visit to this place is complemented by a rich gastronomic offer of authentic fish specialties, themed walks, kayaking.

One of the oldest old towns in the country. During the 4th century BC, Greece began colonizing the Adriatic coast. The colonies also maintained contacts with the local Illyrian population. According to the olive tree located in the settlement of Mirovica near the Old Town, which is estimated to be 2,000 years old, it is assumed that the local population received the olive culture from the Greeks.

Most of the architecture of the Old Town is of Venetian origin. Doors, windows, balconies and many other small but noticeable things are Roman style of the Venetian Republic. There are three basic churches in the Old Town. The first is Saint John, which was built in the 7th century and until the abolition of the Budva diocese was the cathedral, the second the Church of the Mother of God (Santa Maria in Punta) dating from 840 and the third, the Holy Trinity, built in 1804. The Venetian walls of the Old Town are an interesting tourist attraction.

Podgorica is positioned in an ideal position to explore the whole of Montenegro from one place. If you are fearless one day you can set aside for this Canyon. An experienced guide must guide you through the canyon, you must never enter without a guide because it can be extremely dangerous.
