Food scene

A popular little independent restaurant/deli. Excellent brunches, tapas and the pizzas are superb! See also Coast To Go a little further down the road for great take away options.

City/town information

Just a short walk from the cottage you will find Picnic Island. From the memorial gardens at the front of the property, turn left at the gate onto the Roman Road. Beautiful views and always quiet. Dai's shed on Aberdyfi wharf is highly recommended to buy fresh fish and seafood caught that morning! http://www.daisshed.co.uk/

Sightseeing

Photos do not do justice to this breathtaking lake. There is a hotel next to the lake with outdoor seating to enjoy the views with a drink. I really like swimming in this safe open water spot. Pretty cold of course, but fine with a wetsuit. Lake Tal-y-llyn was formed during the last ice age and is located at the foot of Cadair Idris, a great hike if you are interested in the Snowdonia mountain range. The Pony Path is the easiest route. We walked the Minffordd Path; a more challenging walk, but stunning views. You need at least five hours free to get to the summit and back. Located near to the lake is one of the best viewing spots for the Mach Loop. A rare opportunity to see (and hear) low flying aircraft including Tornados, Hawks, Typhoons and F-15E Strike Eagles. Note you can find Mach Loop timetables online, but they are not strictly adhered to so it is more down to luck rather than a guarantee. Such an adrenaline rush if you are lucky enough to experience this.

An excellent beach for sunbathing and a great place to swim. We have never known Tywyn beach to be crowded. Why not take a walk from the beach at Aberdyfi passing the sand dunes to Tywyn beach and stop at The Victorian Slipway pub for a pint of the Welsh favourite Butty Bach? If you don't fancy the five mile walk back you could always get the train which stops just a two minute walk from the cottage. We have been very fortunate to see dolphins from Tywyn beach on many occasions over the years. Tywyn is also the location for a convenient supermarket.

Note that the lower part of the lake is permanently closed. The owners have filled in the tunnel which used to give access to the lake due to the unfortunate behaviour of some tourists. However, the lake is still visible from above and the views are stunning. This former quarry is a real hidden gem.

It is possible to drive to Dolgoch falls, but much more fun to catch the steam train (Talyllyn railway) which also stops at other beauty spots.
