Winery

They are well known for their Rose, but we are quite partial to their Meritage. We have watched them grow over the past few years, and the outdoors is a great place to sit outside and enjoy the scenery. They have light snacks available for purchase, typical charcuterie type meats and cheeses, not quite as extensive as some other wineries. However it's along the 151 tasting route, and Blue Mountain Brewery is right across the street where we highly recommend eating after tasting wine here at Valley Road.

Another one of our favorites. The seating area is spread out across the grounds, as well as some available in a lovely barn style event room. We enjoy all their wines, specifically the reds, with Tradition, and their Petit Verdot being favorites. One of our favorites spots to pack snacks, sick back with friends and enjoy an afternoon at their property relaxing while wine tasting.

Another beautiful setting, we try to visit every time we are up this way. They have several very nice seating area's. Around the pool feels quite "swanky" and the inside tasting room is reminiscent of a hunting lodge, with seating around a fireplace, wood beams etc. They offer light fair such as charcuterie to enjoy while wine tasting. Outside, they have rows of trees which make it particularly nice on hot summer days. We enjoy several of their reds quite a bit.

Pollak vineyards is an unsung hero in my opinion. Not many people have been here when I ask where they visited. However, if you stop by, check out all of the awards they have won for their wines. Specifically multiple Governors Cups. The picture is one I actually took myself of their vines. Great stop, great wine, and dog friendly.

Veritas is one of the first wineries I ever visited in the Albermarle/Nelson region. While our eldest daughter attended UVA, this would be one of our routine visits on the weekends. Beware it is very very popular with the college kids and their parents (as you can see I have firsthand knowledge), it gets very crowded. However, their wines are worth it. Some of our favorites, we typically stock up when we visit. Great outdoors space, and tasting room.

Hazy mountain is probably the nicest venue out of the local wineries. It hosts a large beautiful stone building of what reminds me of the large winery estates in Napa. The atmosphere inside is a bit more formal, this would be a great event space for an important occasion. The outside does offer stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Really stunning. Their wines are ok. We haven't tried their food yet.

Cidery

Bold Rock holds a special place in our hearts. Brian has gluten allergies which put a bid damper on his love of local beer. Now, we have replaced that love with cider and have tried making it on our own (epic fail btw). Bold Rock has cider for almost everyone. Their Virginia grown Apple, Premium Dry, and IPA are all fan favorites in our crowd of family and friends. Their VAT I, and Vintage Dry are along the lines of European ciders, more champaign like in approach and very dry. They have several other blends only available on site at the barn as well. If you have kids or dogs, this is a great place to visit, there is a large outdoor field in the back with plenty of room for everyone to run around. If you are up to the short walk, there are several seats down by the stream that are the perfect peaceful spot to sit, sip, relax, and watch time go by. We hope you enjoy one of our favorite places, and it's fit for the whole family to enjoy.

Brewery

Devil's Backbone is a fun place for all. It's more like an entire campus these days, with a cabin for liquor tasting, a coffee shop, German style restaurant, and a large outdoor space. If you like beer, this is your spot. Even if you don't, it's still a fun spot to hang out with friends. I'm not a huge beer drinker, which means I am not the right person to comment on that. However, we have attended several events, from live music to a Lumberjack Festival.

After a long day of skiing, it is perfect timing for their Dark Hollow stout. Oh so good... like chocolate milk for adults. We have eaten here with family and friends many times, and would recommend their wings, chicken salad platter, nacho's, sandwiches and burgers are all crowd pleasers. Our beer drinking friends seem to enjoy their line-up. However they do have other other offerings such as wine and cider as well.
