I am biased towards galleries, and I love the NGV. The permanent collection is gorgeous and free entry makes it a lovely stop. I would avoid the cafes there though , overpriced and ordinary.

For great Australian art, from early colonoial to contemporary aboriginal, the Ian Potter is a great city stop, and it's free. Only a few hundred meters from the NGV, overload on art, I do!
