Zmajeva špilja

Long before Game of Thrones came along, Brač had its dragons. In a small ethnic village Murvica near Bol, where only a few people live today, dragons are residing for a couple of centuries. If you survive an hour-long walk uphill, in a cave called “Zmajeva pećina” (Dragon’s Cave) you may witness an image of a dragon carved into stone walls. This place was once home to monks who maintained the tradition of Glagolitic writing, mixing Christianity with pagan beliefs, which is still evident in many legends about werewolves, witches, and one very special creature – Orkomarin! Vidova Gora on the island of Brač is the highest mountain and one of the most beautiful viewpoints of the Adriatic. This vast highland covers more than half of the island, it is entirely deserted and uninhabited, and all larger settlements, except for Nerežišće, are located on the coast. Globally, Brač is known for its white marble excavated and processed on several locations on the island. Trail Vidova Gora Trail is a 6.5 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Bol, Split-Dalmatia, Croatia that offers scenic views and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and trail running.

HERMITAGE BLACA MUSEUM. The hermitage (monastery) was founded in the 16th century by the Glagolitic priests who come to Brač fleeding from Poljica before the Turks. Blaca can be reached from many directions, but always exclusively by foot. The path, trodden for centuries by many mules and horses, is still the only connection with civilization. Visitors may travel by car from Nerežišće, over the Vidova gora up to Dragovoda and from there they have to walk for half an hour to Blaca. The museum and monastery in Blaca could also be reached travelling by ship from Bol to the valley of Blaca from where there is another half an hour of walking. The hermitage's origin was in the stone partitioned cave which was the first refuge of the Poljica hermits. From then on, the dilligent and pious hermits built a church and hermitage, residential buildings and farm buildings on the cliff face. They turned vast forests into rich vineyards and olive groves. It is a wonder how the inhabitants of Blaca were able to struggle with wild nature and poor soil and yet managed to survive in such conditions for four centuries. The Glagolitic hermits of Blaca gained large estates, merchant ships, a rich library and a printing shop through their diligence and self-sacrifice. The hermitage's preserved inventory, today a museum, also includes the valuable astronomical heritage of the last Blaca hermit, Father Nikola Milićević, who died in 1963. Blaca are really an exceptional monument of human work, with great historical, economic, artistic and scientific content. Hermitage Blaca is an outstanding natural and cultural phenomenon, a wonderful oasis of peace and memories of days gone by.

Looking at the facade, the parish church is Baroque in style. It was started by the Vužić family (Vusio) with the participation of the Andreis family and other individuals. It is immediately dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. First the present chapel was built, then in 1690 the construction of the north and south walls continued, and the construction did not resume until 1786, and was completed in 1787. As the place grew, so did this church, which was increasingly used in the liturgy, to become a parish church in the 1960s (instead of a monastery church). Above the front door on the front is an angel with Veronica's handkerchief. That motif That motif is of an earlier date than this church, and a similar motif exists in the Dragon's Cave.

In Bol, there is the ‘house in a house’. The story says that the house was created in the 19th century when three brothers from Vukovic family married three Spanish women and decided to build a big house (Paloc) on their land. However, there was already a house located there, built by a local peasant called Marko. The brothers offered Marko a handsome amount for the house, but Marko refused. Influential brothers then sought help from the local authorities but Marko had a huge fight and even threatened to kill the mayor. Fearing retribution, Marko fled to the Dubrovnik Republic and brothers began to build the walls around Marko’s house, planning to bring it down in the process. As they sailed to Venice to get the material for the building, they were caught in a storm and died in a shipwreck. Since they had no heirs, Marko came back to live in his old house, surrounded by the walls of the unfinished house that are still there today.
