Food scene

Don't expect any tex-mex dishes at this Mexican restaurant. Here you will eat classic ingredients with a culinary twist. I recommend you try all the dishes on the menu. It's shared dining, so you won't have to do it alone. Have one of their cocktails to make the experience complete. Located in an industrial area, in walking distance from the house. One of my favourites!!!

On their website you can read the following: "Café de Ceuvel has been founded by people that would like to make a difference in the world, and that starts with your plate. The world food system is one of the biggest causes of climate change and many other social problems in the world. That’s why we are on a quest for truly good food and drinks. This goes further than a label that says ‘organic’. We are coöperating with a large amount of initiatives that make sure that every plate, beer or drink that we serve make a positive impact somewhere else. For instance, we are making our own soda’s with the organic syrups of Saru Soda, we are growing our vegetables together with Mijn Stadstuin in Amsterdam-West and our bitterballs are made of oyster mushrooms that grow on coffee grinds." It's a short walk and even shorter swim or canoe trip from the house to get to the Ceuvel. This is a must see. After having something to eat and/or drink at the Ceuvel Cafe, take the time to wander around the Ceuvel area itself.

Old shipping containers were used to build this cafe/restaurant. Great food, great service, amazing view of the IJ (the water separating Amsterdam North from the rest of Amsterdam), super nice terrace. Be sure to visit the rest of the NDSM when you are here.

Neighborhoods

A former shipyard located on the banks of the River IJ in Amsterdam Noord, the NDSM Wharf has blossomed into an enormous cultural hotspot in recent years with a vibrant artist community and an ever-expanding variety of bars and restaurants. With grounds exceeding the size of ten football pitches, the area hosts multi-disciplinary festivals, performances, exhibitions, dance parties and a wide range of other events in unique, post-industrial surroundings.

The Jordaan is possibly the most famous neighbourhood in the Netherlands. Akin to the reputation enjoyed by London’s Cockneys, this once working-class bastion was renowned for tight community bonds, radical politics and a love for drink and over-the-top sing-a-longs. Gentrification of decades past has attracted more galleries, restaurants, specialty shops and upwardly-mobile residents to its scenic streets but there’s undeniably still a distinct atmosphere to be enjoyed here.

Market

Every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday there is a market on the Van der Pekstraat in Amsterdam Noord. The Pekmarkt is a combination of contemporary and new with authentic and familiar. A bustling market for all your daily groceries. Something for everyone, from bargain hunters to gourmets. You go there for fresh fish or (organic) vegetables and for the pleasant atmosphere that goes with a market; a bit noisy, but above all cozy.

For this market you have to cross the water to get to the other side of town. There you have the Noordermarkt on Saturday's and on Monday's. It's definitely worth having a look.

The IJ-Hallen is the biggest and most unique flea market in Europe and is located in the most densely populated area of The Netherlands. Because of the size of the market, supply and demand are perfectly balanced and you will have a great chance of finding what you are looking for. Unique products like home furnishings and clothing are also offered at very low prices at the market. The IJ-Hallen is recommended to anyone who loves flea markets and great bargains.

Supermarkets

If you want to combine sightseeing with doing your groceries, than the Landmarkt is the place to go. Their products come straight from the farmer, grower and artisan producer. Go there by bike on a sunny day. You can do your groceries and have something to eat and/or drink in their restaurant.

Transportation

The best way to see Amsterdam is by boat or by bike. I have some tips here below.
If you are at the Central Station and you want to come to North, you must take the ferry. The ferry free for everyone. You can take the short ride straight across to the Buiksloterweg. But the more fun trip is to the NDSM. It’s a free beautiful little boat ride on the IJ, in between al the huge cargo ships, across to the other side. The boat trip in itself is fun and worth it. Walking to the house from either stop (Buiksloterweg or NDSM) is about the same distance. I think it’s a 15-20 min walk. I like the walk from the NDSM more.
