Sightseeing

Christchurch is about 6 miles away and is where I was brought up. It’s a nice old town with a small main high street which is closed to traffic on a Monday as they have a market. It’s a lovely place for a mooch around and there are lots of cafes. Christchurch Priory and ruins is 11th century and is a great building to visit. The George at the end of the high street is nice old traditional pub that was once used by smugglers and the oldest one round. The quay has “The Boat House” pub and restaurant (boathouse.co.uk) in front of the bandstand. At the other end of the quay is “The Captains Club” bar and restaurant that has lovely views from inside or out. Good for food or just a drink. (captainsclubhotel.com) Check out the river trip to Hengistbury Head from outside the Captains Club which takes about 30 mins each way but you get some beautiful views from the River Stour. It looks like it runs from Easter to end of October but please check out the website for more info - (bournemouthboating.co.uk)

An old fishing quay where Christchurch harbour and the River Stour meets the sea. The Quay has an old pub called “The Haven House Inn” which is a nice place to sit outside and watch the world go by and the yachts coming into the harbour and the kids or even bigger kids ‘crabbing’! If you walk from the quay and follow the sea wall for about 5 minutes you will get to Avon Beach which is a lovely sandy beach with great views over to the Isle of Wight. It has Avon Cafe and The Noisy Lobster. (avon-beach.noisylobster.co.uk) which I have heard but not tried yet has a great fish menu in the evening and its more of a cafe for breakfast and lunch.

The old town and quay is really quaint and has a nice selection of restaurants and old pubs. There are great views of Poole Harbour and even Sunseeker Yachts which normally has a few Million Pound boats moored up outside if you fancy splashing out!!!! You can also do boats trips from here that go to various places like Wareham River and Brownsea Island and Swanage.(citycruisespoole.com)

We haven’t been there for a while but getting there is worth a trip. So, rather than driving via Wareham if you head for Sandbanks you can take the chain ferry to Studland (I think its about £4 each way) and then travel on from there. (averting the eyes from the nudist beach to your left on arrival!) When you leave from Sandbanks on the ferry if you look behind you, you will get a great view of all the huge houses that back onto the river, Harry Redknapp’s is the 4th house to the left of the slipway !!! Also, Jamie (Harry’s son) and Louise bought the house next door (as you would if you could!!) Until they split up – clearly money isn’t everything!! A couple of miles after you get off the ferry in Studland there a pub called “The Bankes Arms” which has some awesome views from the huge beer garden. Can’t help you much with Swanage itself but it always seems popular in the summer. If you have any time left and want to make a day of it, you could carry on to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door which are about 30 minutes away and are great places as well. Just google the Jurassic Coast an this will give you loads of info on beaches and beautiful walks – be careful though as there are frequent rock falls and if you have a dog keep them on a lead as there is no fencing along the cliff top! If you do end up in Lulworth you’re better off coming back via Wareham and not going back to the ferry as its much quicker. Please bare in mind that during July and August the queues for the ferry can be mad at peak times and Bank holidays !!

Just up the road from us is Wimborne, there are some nice cafes, pubs and small shops. The Minster and the gardens are really popular.
