Ogunquit (pronounced /o-gun-quit/) was named by the indigenous Abenaki tribe and it means "a beautiful place by the sea".
It was first a village within Wells, settled in 1641. Ogunquit separated from Wells in 1980 and received visitors from all the corners of the Earth.
Its fame brought joy to all the world and even Stephen King placed part of the action from “The Stand”, published in 1978, in Ogunquit.
This raw diamante has flourished from a fishing village in Perkins Cove surrounded by farms and rustic homes, to the sparkling tourist destination it is today.
