Reisgids Villa Kalkan

Your holiday in Kalkan

An overview of Kalkan... Kalkan is set in one of Europe's most breath-taking, grand sweeping Mediterranean bays, with the truly majestic Taurus Mountains as a backdrop. An exquisite harbour, full of Turkish wooden gulets and small fishing craft, bordered with waterfront restaurants and the beach, is where the beautiful and historic old town area extends back from the sea. Read the text or watch this 17 minute video https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VF3pYKB5iXE Kalkan Old Town Formerly an important coastal trading port, Kalkan is now a thriving but still unspoilt holiday resort with the bustling historic Old Quarter being the heart of the town. After dusk, its winding streets full of traditional houses, restaurants, small boutiques and local shops with overhanging balconies teem with people as the tantalising aromas of Kalkan's renowned cuisine entice people down to the harbour and surrounding streets. An eclectic mix of Greek and old Kalkan architecture, with roof terrace restaurants and lovely views to the sea, the old town is a place you will want to discover and enjoy. The Greek Orthodox Church by Kalkan's harbour has been converted into a mosque and is the best example of Greek architecture in Kalkan, however at every turn you will still find whitewashed and stone buildings with shuttered windows and balconies which reveal Kalkan's history. From Kalkan's harbour, many of the beach clubs dotted around the bay are accessed by small colourful boats that provide a often complimentary service to transfer guests. You will also find traditional wooden Gulets that offer boat trips to the beaches, islands and inlets nearby. Water sports, diving and fishing trips are also offered. The UNESCO world heritage site of Xanthos was Lycia's capital city for much of its history and the principal cities of Tlos, Myra, Pinara and Patara, all close to Kalkan attract visitors from all over the world to look at the ancient ruins dating back over 2000 years. The British museum also has an extensive collection of Lycian artefacts. The Taurus mountains rise to over ten thousand feet and the highest peaks are snow covered right into early summer. Its magnificent scenery with its lakes, woods and forests, its stunning turquoise coast line and superb ruins of two dozen cities make the Lycian coastline, with Kalkan in the middle, a place to explore and enjoy. Lycia's coastline runs for several hundred kilometres, borders the Mediterranean and attracts yachtsmen to the crystal clear waters and near perfect climate. The climate is often compared to that of Southern California as you can be guaranteed sun from May to October and beyond. Endless warm days can be spent at your private pool, on the town beach, visting the many beach clubs or enjoying lazy days at sea. You can also learn to sail, scuba dive and water ski - the choices are endless. Outside of Kalkan... Furthermore, if the mood takes you there is plenty more to see outside the confines of Kalkan. Beaches such as the 12 mile long Patara beach, Kaputas beach and 'Olu Deniz' add to the scenic appeal of Turkey and can be excellent places to spend your days at. Or if you fancy a drive up into the mountains you will find the small village Islamlar. This village makes for a great escapes from the buzz of Kalkan and have a real sense of community. You will find some great fresh trout restaurants too. Beach Clubs Kalkan has 9 beach clubs nearby, most of which can be reached by water taxi from the harbour, making it very easy to enjoy the sea. The beach clubs are set into the bottom of the mountain side, complete with paved platform terraces and gardens, and they offer everything from swimming and sunbathing, to water sports and restaurant facilities. You can spend a whole day at a beach club entertaining the family and it is the perfect place to experience the Mediterranean, whether you're swimming, snorkelling or just watching the world go by from the terrace. Sunbathe, swim, or just have fun; there is plenty for all to enjoy. Restaurants Kalkan's topography has resulted in narrow winding cobbled streets that run along, and rise away from the waterfront. This has meant that over the years industrious restaurateurs have found all sorts of spaces in which to start a restaurant, and in so doing created the unique charm and character of many of Kalkan's eateries. Many are located on roof terraces, offering views across Kalkan's rooftops to the sea, some tucked in corners that need to be sought out, and others on the marina and beach front to rival any in the Mediterranean. Chefs are creative, and source ingredients locally on the whole. There is an abundance of organic fruit and vegetables, full of flavour, and these form the basis of much of Kalkan's cuisine along with fresh fish, beef, lamb and chicken. Kalkan dining is so often memorable, the views, setting sun, friendly attentive service, and of course the food and drink. Here we offer an overview of different locations and establishments, and invite you to discover more about eating and drinking in Kalkan. There are many different experiences. There is roof terrace dining, waterfront dining, traditional restaurants and trout farms up in the mountains. And if you download the 'Villa Eats' app. you can find plenty of Take Aways as well. Lazy Day at Sea Relax, unwind, find a comfortable place to stretch out, and as you make your way out of Kalkan harbour, already, a new perspective of Kalkan's mountainous backdrop opens up before you. The captain finds a sheltered bay, drops anchor, and the crew start to prepare the fresh, local ingredients on board. A meal typically comprises meat or fish, salads, vegetables, breads, and a dessert. There is a bar service available throughout the day offering wine, beer, water and soft drinks. Itineraries are carefully planned to provide a good balance of relaxation and swimming/snorkelling, with the chance to explore as much of the stunning Turquoise coastline as possible. Your boattrip usually starts at around 10:00 and returns to the harbour at approximately 17:00 in the afternoon. Just ask any boat in the harbour for the possibilities. RESTAURANTS and beach clubs 1. Şahika Bahçe (you pronounce it as sjahika baadsje) for a fabulous breakfast treat, some 5 km up in the mountains in Berzirgan. 2. Go to the Trout farm restaurants in the mountains in Islamlar, Bodamya Tepe, The village restaurant....some 10 km. 3. Visit the beach clubs like Indigo at the harbour, or Zest beach club...two of my favourites and especially the last one.
