Food and drink

The closest village, has groceries (Bethel Central Market), Cockadoodle pizza (great for families with kids), and a classy sandwich/wine shop (with great views of the falls). Not to be missed is Babe's Bar (named after Paul Bunyan's ox, just so you don't get the wrong idea).

Open seasonally, carries extremely local maple syrup, eggs, beef and chicken. The maple syrup is made in the sugar house, the cows on the other side of the fence provide the beef and the chickens live 100 yards away. You can talk to the horses across the road. Rupert also stocks ice and firewood as well as a great selection of perennials. About a half mile south on North Rd.

Roads of VT

A beautiful piece of Vermont landscape, restored and maintained by the local residents. Walkers and gravel cyclists can get through at the top where it turns to Class 4 (unmaintained road), other vehicles can do it as an out and back from Stage Rd. If you come from the top end (at the intersection of Webster Hill Rd and Skyline) you can park at the top of the road and walk down the Class 4 road. There is a trail (wide double track) off the southeast side of the road, marked by two stone pillars. You can follow it down to just off Webster Hill Rd.

This beautiful road climbs steeply for miles. A challenge on the bike.; starts as smooth dirt, goes to rough gravel, then to a boulder strewn surface. Gradients top 15% in many places. Turn around when it looks too rough for the kind of day you had in mind, because it keeps getting worse until you crest the ridge. Where it starts to flatten out there is an old cemetery on your right that is worth a visit. The road quality deteriorates as the landscape gets more spectacular. On foot you can go all the way through over the top of the Mt Hunger ridge, where it turns into Davis Rd. and down into the Stoney Brook valley. Some parts of it are logged, other have some beautiful forest. There are a few side roads off Smith Hill Rd that connect to other forest roads. Once on Stoney Brook Rd, you can follow it up to the Appalachian trail, or back down to 107. On an MTB, there is one challenging uphill boulder strewn section of the road. I have done this on a road bike, but I carried it for several miles over seriously rough terrain.

Dirt road climbs out of Woodstock relentlessly. Just as relentless is the beauty of the farms and the views as you climb. It crosses the Appalachian trail near the top. Makes a great ride on a gravel bike, or a nice afternoon drive. This makes a great gravel bike ride. The road becomes a Class 4 at the top after it passes the Appalachian Trail. you can get through on a mountain or gravel bike, or one foot. A wild old road into one of the least inhabited parts of Vermont. Look for a yellow gate on the west side next to the Barnard Town Forest. A Class 4 road heads off here and goes all the way through to Stony Brook, traversing through forest and some logged out pieces. On a gravel bike you can do a long out and back to Bridgewater Corners, refresh at the general store and come back through. At the top, in the open meadow, follow the road that goes high on the east side to avoid the combination stream/road that is the main route.

Hiking and Running

In the middle of Vermont's only National Park, Mt Tom provides access to quiet trails of all kinds, as well a quiet ponds and beautiful views. It has wide carriage roads, smaller double track and some beautiful single track. No bikes permitted but great walking and running. Use the Faulkner trail from Faulkner Park in Woodstock for the shortest route to a spectacular view. Park at the park headquarters on Hwy 12 and walk across the road to get access to the carriage roads and trails. There is a museum, information center off the parking lot. You can also access the trails from the quieter trailhead off Prosper Rd, giving you closer access to the Pogue and the upper sections of the park.

This is a steep climb up off Hwy 12. If you stay right at the fork, the road dead ends but continues as a Class 4 road. The upper part was logged recently (2015) but the lower part is a beautiful forest. If you follow it through, it opens into a field off Gill Rd. This connector makes it a nice 8 mile loop run from the house.

Just below the intersection of Tower Rd and North Rd is an old Class 4 Rd. You can park either down in Barnard, or by pulling to the edge of the road at the intersection of Tower and North Rd. The entrance is sort of hidden on the east side of the road about 100 yds down from the intersection. It runs along the edge of the State Park for a while then continues, more or less in a straight line all the way up to Royalton Hill Rd. The forest canopy covers the road the whole way.

Right next to Hwy 100, but hidden in the trees, a large beautiful waterfall. The route up there from Rochester on Hwy 100 (and through to Warren), makes a great bike ride with only moderate (for VT) gradients. Four gap rides depart from this stretch of Hwy 100 for those looking for some serious mountain riding. Brandon, Middlebury, Lincoln and Appalachian gaps on the west side, Roxbury and Rochester gaps to the east.
