Calvert Cliffs is a region famous for fossil hunting, and perfect for kids. There's plenty of sites to chose; we've found that Matoaka Beach (1 hr, 15min), is an enjoyable afternoon destination. The tall cliffs provide shade in the afternoon, and there's a large shallow area for the kids to swim (watch out for jelly fish 'tho). The beach is private, $5 entry fee per person (kids might be free), and perhaps a little less crowded then the public beaches. We've found a shark teeth right at the beach edge, and it's a nice little picnic spot (a little bit of a walk from the parking lot, down the cliffs, and along the beach)

On the way south / north from Calvert Cliffs, stop off at the Battle Creek Cypress park, for a short walk with the kids. It's a neat little spot, very different environment than any of the surrounding areas.

Very close to Annapolis (~20min drive), this is a lovely little spot for families and visitors - a "lost" colonial town and garden sanctuary on the South River. Entrance fee required.
