Wissler Road, Mount Jackson, VA 22842 One of the best-known covered bridges is the 204-foot single-span Burr arch truss known as Meem's Bottom Covered Bridge in Mount Jackson. The Meem's Bottom Bridge was constructed in 1892-93 from materials cut and quarried nearby for the massive arch supports and stone abutments, which extended 10 feet below the riverbed. It was deeded to the Highway Department in the 1930's in return for assuming its maintenance. This long span over the North Fork of the river carried traffic for more than 80 years before being burned by vandals on Halloween 1976. After salvaging the original timbers, the bridge was reconstructed and eventually undergirded with steel beams and concrete piers. The bridge was reopened to traffic in 1979 and is still in operation to date. One of the many stops along the Wilderness Trail in Shenandoah County!

1290 Richmond Ave, Staunton, VA 24401 The Frontier Culture Museum of Virginia tells the story of the thousands of people who migrated to colonial America, and of the life they created here for themselves and their descendants. These first pioneers came to America during the 1600s and 1700s from communities in the hinterlands of England, Germany, Ireland, and West Africa. Many were farmers and rural craftsmen set in motion by changing conditions in their homelands, and drawn to the American colonies by opportunities for a better life. Others came as unwilling captives to work on farms and plantations. Regardless of how they arrived, all became Americans, and all contributed to the success of the colonies, and of the United States. The Frontier Culture Museum is open seven days a week, 360 days each year. Hours vary by season. https://www.frontiermuseum.org/index.php/about/

3659 S Ox Rd, Edinburg, VA 22824 Shenandoah Vineyards is the second oldest active winery in Virginia, and the oldest winery in the Shenandoah Valley, founded in 1976 by Jim and Emma Randel. The Randels were two visionaries, who recognized the viticultural potential of their site. Located in Edinburg on land that had been in Emma’s family since the mid-1800s, Jim and Emma planted their first 5,000 vines in 1976 and went on to enjoy over 4 decades of success. Michael Shaps purchased Shenandoah Vineyards in the fall of 2018 after working as a winemaking consultant for Emma for several years. Michael recognized the viticultural potential of the limestone soils and drier growing conditions. “Shenandoah is the driest county in Virginia and one of the driest east of the Mississippi River with ideal soil composition and optimal elevation.” - Michael Shaps Michael is excited about the viticultural potential and the opportunity to revitalize the vineyards with varieties that grow especially well in the valley, and adding Alsatian varietals like pinot gris and pinot blanc to the existing old vine riesling.

Access: North Fork at New Market – The parking for this access is at the corner New Market Depot Rd and Plains Mill Rd. Follow the path under the bridge to the river. This is hand launch only; good for wading and swimming! OR Access at Meems Bottom Covered Bridge – Access is on the east bank under the covered bridge on the Rt. 11 side of the river. You’ll see a small gravel parking lot on the south side of the road directly across from the entrance to a corn maze which is open seasonally in the fall. Follow a small path about 50 feet down to the river bottom. Picnic tables also present. The North Fork is an ideal river to float by canoe. Clear water, pleasant scenery, abundant wildlife, and mild whitewater make the North Fork a paddler’s dream. However, low flows during the summer months often require canoeists to walk their boats through shallow areas. The primary navigational hazards on the river are six dams and several low-water bridges. The first dam is upstream of Timberville; three dams are located between Edinburg and the Route 758 bridge east of Woodstock; and two small dams are found between Strasburg and Riverton.

The pathway up to the swimming hole is rocky, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes. Also, be on the lookout for wildlife — it's been reported that snakes also enjoy lounging in this area of the woods!

Hike and Swim! Advanced and Experienced hikers only! Follow directions carefully to find this emerald-hued hidden gem swimming hole! A short drive off Route 11 in New Market, plan to park in front of the Massanutten Visitor Center (permanently closed). Here you’ll find a lot suited for at least 10 cars. You’ll see a picnic table, as well as trailhead signs for the Wildflower Trail and the Discovery Trail. Both are very short trails that lead into the national forest. This hike to Emerald Pond begins with a short walk along the white-blazed Wildflower Trail. This trail sets off just steps from the now-defunct Massanutten Visitor Center. Proceed past signage for the Wildflower Trail along a narrow hiking trail. Interestingly, Stonewall Jackson marched his troops across this mountainous area during the Civil War. At the .3-mile mark, turn right for the orange-blazed Massanutten South Trail. From here, it’s a rather steep climb over the next mile with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet. Along the way, there are two rock scrambles. The more sizeable of the two scrambles appears at the .8-mile mark, while a second, smaller rock scramble is at the 1.2-mile mark. Press on. Your efforts will soon be rewarded. At the 1.3-mile mark, a short spur trail leads to a spectacular west-facing overlook. But wait, there’s more. A much larger overlook area follows this first overlook. There are plenty of flat rocks to take a much-deserved seat on to re-fuel and re-hydrate after the steep ascent. As you proceed, you’ll find the trail narrows. There is more forest and more trees. At the 2.1-mile mark, you’ll reach a wooden trail marker. Stay right for the white-blazed Bird Knob Trail. You will arrive at a clearing at the 3.9-mile mark. Stay left to continue on a barely visible dirt trail. In a few more steps, you will connect with a wide, rocky trail (still Bird Knob Trail). Descend through the forest until you reach an unmarked trail on the left at the 4.2-mile mark. It’s very easy to walk right past this trail since it’s not marked and not at all clear what’s there, but if you were to do so, you’d miss the very best part of this hike. A very short walk up this trail reveals spring-fed Emerald Pond. It’s rather striking and you will want to stare out into the small pond for some time.

Woodstock Tower Road
The Woodstock Tower, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps provides a stunning, 360 degree view of the town of Woodstock, Fort Valley and the seven bends of the Shenandoah River at over 2000 ft. This area is now part of the George Washington National Forest and abounds in hiking trails and areas for camp sites. Located off Woodstock Tower Road by way of Mill Road. GPS Coordinated to the parking lot are 38.871973, -78.447241. Please note: Woodstock Tower Road is not accessible to trailers, motor homes or RVs due to share curves and steep grades. The road is also closed when weather conditions warrant.
The Mountain Run swimming hole, also known as the Fridley Gap Hole, located just outside of Keezleton, Virginia, is a popular swimming hole located at about the halfway point of a great hiking loop in the George Washington National Forest. The swimming hole is small, but a refreshing dip for hikers willing to enter the chilly river along their hike around the loop. The highest the water gets is about chest deep and in the most shallow area knee deep. The swimming hole itself is only about 0.5 miles away from the trailhead so hiking the full trail is not necessary, but can provide a great activity for the day as visitors explore the area surrounding the swimming hole. The water is cold all year so prepare accordingly with towels and possibly a change of clothes. The best times to swim in the Mountain Run swimming hole is from about May to September so that conditions are best suited for a dip in a frigid swimming hole. The Mountain Run swimming hole is about as picturesque as a swimming hole can be and offers visitors a true all-American experience swimming in beautiful Virginia!
