Pebble beach is an excellent place to explore within walking distance of our home! To a great spot for short walks along the beach or just hanging out for an afternoon. There are three different access points to the beach, the closest one with stairs to access tidal pools at the south end.

Point St George is a really unique area with trails that wind through grass filled bluffs along the ocean. It also has an access point to the ocean. This is the largest beach Crescent City has to offer, stretching for miles to the North. Since it faces the open ocean and isn’t protected by a bay, it tends to be more windy and have rougher waves. It’s the best place for sea shell and rock hunting! There’s also some tidal pools you can check out at low tide on the west side of the beach.

We highly recommend the Cadra Loop Trail because of its versatile scenery. You’ll experience forested paths, sandy dunes, a lake, and the ocean, all on the same 4 mile loop! This trail is great for mountain biking or horseback riding as well.

The harbors of Crescent City are a fun place to walk around and look at the fishing boats of Crescent City up close. Crabbing is huge here in late fall/early winter. If you’re in the area during that time of the year, you’ll see hundreds of crab baskets stacked in the parking lot of the harbor in preparation for the season.

If you’re interested in exploring the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, we definitely recommend stopping by the Visitor Center to get some more info. All the rangers are super kind and friendly and love sharing what they know about the area as well as some great recommendations on things to explore! There’s lots of free guided tours as well you can ask about, including hiking and river kayaking tours.

Howland Hill road is a must see while in town! You can drive along a dirt road through some of the oldest and biggest redwoods the park has to offer. There’s tons of hiking trails you can stop and park at along the road! One of the most popular trails is the Stout Grove 0.5 mile loop trail- a must see! Another popular hike is along Mill Creek Trail to see the Grove of the Titans. They recently completed trail restoration on this path and now have a great raised platform and new signage along the way. A great hike for kids with just a few small hills. We recommend stopping by the Jedediah Smith State Park Visitor Center to get a trail map and to ask more questions about the area.

In addition to hiking trails, there’s a few great places to lounge by the river for a swim. It tends to be about 10 degrees warmer and sunnier in the Redwoods compared to Crescent City, so if you’re looking for a place to warm up this is a great option. We recommend checking out the day use area in the Jedediah Smith Redwood National State Park. It’s a few dollars to park your car for the day. They offer picnic tables, BBQ pits, and it’s a safe area to bring kids to swim for the day. They even have life jackets available free of charge for kids to use while swimming!

An amusement park about 30 minutes south of Crescent City that offers things like canopy trail paths, a gondola ride, and walking paths. It’s definitely more touristy, but they have a fun gift shop to check out and it can be a fun place for kids to explore if you’re looking for a different experience of the redwoods.

THE CITY

Crescent City is a small but mighty place with unique gems to explore and visit while you’re here.
This is a fun place to check out with the kids. You’ll be surprised by how much there is to see for an aquarium in such a small town. They have a touch pool, large fish tank area with lots of different critters, as well as some seals they do a special show with. They also have a great gift shop! Definitely a great place to stop by if it’s a rainy day or if you or anyone you’re travelling with is really into sea critters.

THE FOOD

You can fill almost every craving with the quality small-town cuisine in Crescent City.
This is our absolute favorite restaurant in town! They have excellent food and beer and offer a great environment for the whole family. Their brewery is in house and we promise you won’t be disappointed. It gets pretty busy during the summer so we recommend going an hour before you’re ready to eat to put down your name on the waiting list.

Crescent City has it’s very own cheese factory! You can stop by here to sample and buy their cheese. They also have a window you can look through to see the actual factory. The “squeaky cheese” (raw cheese curds) are usually a hit with kids because of it’s fun texture and the squeaky sound it makes when you eat it.
