Sightseeing
Gamlebyen means "Old Town" in Norwegian. This is an important part of the town of Fredrikstad. It is the oldest living fortified town in the North of Europe. It is located on the banks of the river Glomma (the largest and longest river in Norway), just where the river meets the ocean.
There are ferries from the centre of town which will take you over the river to Gamlebyen from the riverbank on the town centre side in less than a minute. These ferries run frequently all day and late at night and are free of charge.

Gamlebyen

One of the largest prehistoric sites in Norway. Impressive site with nine (!) rings of standing stones and many mounds from the early bronze age. Also nearby there are grave mounds and ca 1,5 km walk is a village fort called Ravneberget (the Raven's Mountain) from the same period where the views over Fredrikstad, Hvaler and beyond are absolutely spectacular. Well worth the walk!
