Neighbourhoods

This is such a lovely area to be staying, being attractive and quiet, but having loads of exciting things on the doorstep.
Every Saturday morning there is a farmers market on the road (Florence Road market) where there are lots of local produce stalls, food and gift stalls and often live music. It is only a few houses up the road and we would recommend visiting.

You’ll also be a couple of minutes’ walk from our local park (Preston park) which is very well maintained and especially beautiful summer time. The outdoor tennis courts are free before 10am and we'd be more than happy for you to borrow our rackets if you let us know in advance. There are also outdoor table tennis and basketball courts as well as many different garden areas and a rotunda café.

A newly created garden space with restaurant, coffee shop and shop all selling local, organise produce. The gardens are beautiful to walk around and often there are events or classes going on you can be part of. Do look it up, you won’t be disappointed.

This is an area that visitors of Brighton always enjoy going to - it is near the sea, but more importantly it is a mix of old buildings, down little streets selling food, jewellery and many other boutique items. It’s a nice area to walk around and only a 20 minute walk (through the vibrant North Laine and The Pavilion gardens) from our place.

The Open Market, again only a few minutes’ walk from ours, has a great mix of staple and unusual market stalls, the 'honeyman' is a favourite of ours! It’s open everyday, but Saturday is the best.

Lewes is a quaint and quintessentially English town build predominantly out of flint and is only a short train ride from ours (go from London road station which is just 1 minute from our place and just a few stops). We’d recommend a visit if you are staying a couple of nights or more, as it has a similar creative and foodie scene as Brighton, but a very different feel.

Food scene

Brighton is known for its ‘foodie’ scene and there really are some gems in this city. Here are a few of our personal recommendations.
Our ‘local’ pub is ‘The Open House’, just one road away, next to London Road train station, which has a friendly atmosphere, great food and a good selection of drinks. It also has a great garden and lovely open fires.

A couple of minutes down the road is Café Rust – this is our favourite café, it has a brilliant vibe, fantastic food and coffee and it’s run by a lovely couple. Anyone we take there loves it. By evening they also have many high end chefs rotating ‘residencies’ and ‘pop-ups’ offering tasting menus and Michelin starred cuisine. All in all it’s definitely one to visit.

‘The Ivy’ is a very stylish and opulently decorated bar and restaurant near the South Lanes, but it also has a very fun air about it! Very high on our recommendation list, even if just for a drink (the cocktails are great!).

Kutsaki manages to pull off cool and stylish, but with an extremely high quality atmosphere and even better food. Japanese vegan is the theme, but the flavours are brilliant and it is somewhere that feel very special. Plus it’s only a few minutes walk down the road: even better!

Whilst this isn’t the most glamorous of places, it is very ‘hipster’ and you’d be pushed to get a better burger (and rosemary fries for that matter). Can’t fault the food and sometimes one just needs a ‘dirty burger’ which is why it makes it onto our recommendations!

Sightseeing and things to do

There activities and things to see in Brighton to suit every taste. Here is a small selection of a mix of our recommendations.
If you are new to Brighton, we would have to recommend the Brighton Pavilion, a fantastic building with an interior that is frankly as mad as a box of frogs.

Consejos para la ciudad

Cómo moverse

Transport

Central Brighton is notoriously car unfriendly (in relation to parking). Our place is within walking distance of central Brighton, including the Laines, seafront and main shopping area (and station). We would recommend taking a car, bus or bicycle if travelling to Hove or into the Downs. There is a quick and easy cycle scheme located throughout the city that lets you use bikes by the minute (search BTN bikeshare for info) which we’d recommend. If you would like to bring another car, parking is on-road ‘pay and display’ or there is free parking in Harrington Road, just 15 minutes walk away.
