Heart of the city, Piazza Maggiore (115 x 60 meters) is the result of centuries-old transformations that gradually enriched it with important buildings: the Basilica of San Petronio, the Palazzo dei Notai, the Palazzo d'Accursio, the Palazzo del Podestà and the Palazzo dei Banchi. Attached to Piazza Maggiore are the Fountain of Neptune and Palazzo Re Enzo.

Piazza Maggiore San Petronio is the patron saint of Bologna. Inside there is a sundial. The panoramic terrace can be visited. The Basilica of San Petronio is the largest church in Bologna: it dominates the Piazza Maggiore opposite and, despite being largely unfinished, it is one of the largest churches in Europe. Its imposing dimensions make it the fourth largest church in Italy. The building, built by civic and non-ecclesiastical will, should have been in the shape of a cross (224 meters long and 158 meters wide) and thus become the largest basilica in Christianity. But the Archiginnasio, a palace financed entirely by Pontifical resources and completed in 1562, was built just 12 meters from the basilica, parallel to the main nave, thus preventing the ambitious Latin cross project from being carried out.

Basilica di San Luca - Via di San Luca, 36 The sanctuary can be reached from Porta Saragozza through a long and characteristic arcaded road, which crosses via Saragozza with the monumental Arco del Meloncello and then climbs steeply up to the sanctuary. A growing pilgrimage developed following the so-called "miracle of the rain" of July 5, 1433, when the spring rains, which threatened to damage the harvest, ceased when a procession brought the icon to the city. With the increase in the influx of pilgrims, the very long portico was built between 1600/1700 to protect pilgrims from the rain. From the Arco del Meloncello it takes 30 minutes by foot. Alternatively, you can take the San Luca Express train in the center (10 euros). Along the way you can see a part of the panorama of Bologna. Inside the Basilica there is the icon of the Madonna attributed to San Luca. You can access the panoramic terrace (5 euros) with a view of Bologna.

Cimitero monumentale della Certosa di Bologna, Ingresso principale
The cemetery of the Certosa of Bologna was founded in 1801 by reusing the structures of the Carthusian convent built starting in 1334 and suppressed in 1796. The church of San Girolamo is an intact testimony to the lost wealth of the convent. In the cemetery there are some important figures in local and national history, including the painter Giorgio Morandi, the Nobel Prize for Literature Giosuè Carducci, the writer Riccardo Bacchelli, the opera singer Carlo Broschi known as Farinelli, the composer Ottorino Respighi and the singer Lucio Dalla. Throughout the nineteenth century, the Certosa was a privileged destination for visitors to Bologna. Lord Byron and Charles Dickens left written records of their walk in the cemetery. Since 2021, the Certosa di Bologna has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Portici di Bologna" project.
