Another playground for older kids on the other side, next to the soccer fields. If you keep going you'll see two baseball fields. On the way to Pentagon Row food courtyard.

Another playground for older kids on the other side, next to the soccer fields. If you keep going you'll see two baseball fields. On the way to Pentagon Row food courtyard.
Lots of restaurants on the 23rd st S from Fern to Richmond highway. Two thai restaurants, sushi, diner, italian, pub, ethiopian etc. These are more old school and have been here for a long time.

This is a great place if you'd like to be away from the crowds and and enjoy a picnic or get some food at the marina restaurant, while enjoying the views of Washington, DC on the other shore of the Potomac river, as the airplanes take off just above your head.
It's accessible via a biking trail or you can drive there.

* All Smithsonian museums are FREE and amazing.
* You might need to get online reservations for some if it's a busy season (in particular African American Culture museum, or going to the top of the Washington Monument).
* Parking on the National Mall is hard to find, try going a block to the right off the Independence Avenue (towards the river). Usually I can find something on 9th st SW between Independence and C st SW.
* Great people watching and place for a picnic of just rest in the Lafayette Park (the other side of the White House).

Trip Planner allows you to enter your starting location and your destination and get several routes: https://www.wmata.com/schedules/trip-planner/ TIP: when plotting travel from the house try selecting “only metro” option since it’s a short walk to the metro stops. Otherwise it might tell you to go to a bus stop and take a bit to the metro which would actually just add more time.
