This Johnson City area park is a hidden gem for hikers! The White Rock loop trail is challenging, varied, and pretty, with some amazing overlooks. Lots of trails intersecting one another, so you can make this as long or short as you like. Traverse a little creek at the bottom. And only 10 minutes from Johnson City!

It's an hour and a half away, but the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway drive makes the drive part of the experience. We drive in through Weaverville and back through Burnsville to make the most of the drive. The Deep Gap trail is challenging and very scenic, and the Summit loop is more relaxed. The picnic area is idyllic. The highest peaks east of the Mississippi!

City/town information

Need I say more? Shopping, breweries, the arts district, the Grove Park Inn area, live music, and great restaurants. We love to rent e-bikes to ride through Montfort and along the river, wander through the stores on Lexington, brewery hop in South Slope, and see artists in studio in the River Arts area.

The downtown is tiny, but there is the casual Stack House restaurant that we love, the Hickory Gorge brewery located in a historic theatre, the pretty Mars Hill College campus, and a Saturday farmers market in the warmer months. Outside of downtown you can treasure hunt at Fabulous Finds & Collectibles and pick up produce, flowers, and amazing homemade candles at TJs Mountain Market. The closest grocery store to our cabin is here as well.

Take the backroads to Burnsville and appreciate the countryside. The small and cute downtown is complete with fun shops and restaurants, there is a fantastic brewery with good food and live music on the weekends, and the visitor center has a driving tour our the "barn quilts -" colorful markers typical on barns all over the area.
