Dixville Notch State Park spans 127 acres. Despite its small size, the park has breathtaking views along a scenic gorge and waterfalls on two mountain brooks. Hiking trails lead to Table Rock and nearby mountains. In less than a 0.1 mile from a roadside parking area you will find the Baby Flume (alternatively referred to as Dixville Flume or Flume Brook Cascade.) The gorge was carved out by Flume Brook. The falls tumble 18 feet over a set of three drops. There are additional smaller cascades and a pool further downstream. Dixville Notch, is home to Table Rock, a 2,540-foot cliff with sheer vertical drop-offs on either side. This brief yet heart-pumping climb has dazzling views in every direction and is a part of the Go North 9er Challenge that invites hikers to complete all nine peaks in the North Country. Tired legs are rewarded with scenic vistas that show off the Notch’s rugged, prominent peaks and serrated edges that shoot up into the sky. Cross Route 26 to access the trailhead for Sanguinary Ridge Trail — another thigh-burner that is pretty short and sweet thanks to a steep climb in just 1.5 miles. From this vantage point, hikers get an even better look at The Balsams Resort and Lake Gloriette, before zigging and zagging back down the switchbacks and through a rust-colored scree where you can get a unique perspective of Table Rock from below. It’s hard to find another landscape in the state that is as pristine and dramatic as this one. The North Country’s distinctive natural features are a favorite because of the way it feels new and exciting every time, and will make for some of the best hiking and gravel biking in all of the Great North Woods. When you’re done, make sure you have a proper recovery drink at Black Bear Tavern in downtown Colebrook.

Madison Boulder Natural Area is home to the largest known glacial erratic in North America, and among the largest in the world. Madison Boulder is a huge granite rock measuring 83 feet in length, 23 feet in height above the ground, 37 feet in width, and weighs upwards of 5,000 tons! The 17-acre site was acquired by the state of N.H. in 1946. In 1970 Madison Boulder was designated a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior because the enormous erratic, "is an outstanding illustration of the power of an ice sheet to pluck out very large blocks of fractured bedrock and move them substantial distances." Recent work puts the boulder's age at around 14,000 years old.

Probably one of the most-popular destinations in all of the White Mountains...Franconia Notch State Park! Franconia Notch is a spectacular mountain pass traversed by a unique parkway which extends from the Flume Gorge at the south to Echo Lake at the north. For eight miles, I-93 winds between the high peaks of the Kinsman and Franconia mountain ranges. Franconia Notch was the home of the famous Old Man of the Mountain, the same "Great Stone Face" immortalized by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Daniel Webster. While you are here, stop at the Flume Gorge Visitor Center and walk through the renowned Flume Gorge, ride the exciting aerial tramway at Cannon Mountain, and visit the New England Ski Museum. Take your time, stop for a swim at Echo Lake, net a trout while fly fishing at Profile Lake, ride your bike on the Recreational Trail, watch for rock climbers, hawks, and falcons on Cannon Cliffs, or hike on the Appalachian Trail. Bring the family, stay awhile, and enjoy Franconia Notch State Park.

This moderately-difficult hike can be made on foot directly from the Riverside Retreat. It is recommended that you have a reasonable level of fitness. Mt. Hayes is the westernmost peak in the Mahoosuc Range. It stands guard over Gorham, bounded by the Androscoggin River on two sides. A short but sprawling mass, Hayes features several cliff-fronted knobs on its southern slopes. Its main viewpoint is a ledge to the south side of the summit which offers a fine vista overlooking Gorham and the northern side of Pinkham Notch. Walk up to Main Street from the Riverside Retreat. Take a right and walk through the VIP parking lot, to the parking area at the base of the footbridge. Cross the footbridge to the trailhead sign and turn right onto the Mahoosuc Trail, which leads 0.2 miles through the forest, then crosses a power line cut. It quickly joins an unnamed brook, which it follows closely for a short distance, passing a small cascade. Half a mile from the road, a spur turns right off the main trail and leads 0.2 miles to Mascot Pond, a lovely pond with mountain views across the water. Behind Mascot Pond is a dramatic gravel slide which drops from the cliffs of Leadmine Ledge. Back on the Mahoosuc Trail, continue the gradual ascent through wonderfully open woods, crossing a grassy old road a half mile from the pond spur. The trail begins to climb more steeply, following a prominent drainage most of the way up with one small brook crossing near the beginning. The ascent is mostly straight up-slope, with few switchbacks. Some birch stands are passed along the way. The trail curves slowly to the northwest for the first 0.7 miles, then turns to the right and climbs more steeply through coniferous woods for the final 0.3 miles. The trail then levels off somewhat and a spur on the right leads out to a nice open ledge. This is 0.3 (trail) miles south of the summit and 0.5 miles south of the junction with Centennial Trail. This ledge viewpoint is notable for its excellent birds-eye view of Gorham and the Androscoggin River. It presents a fine view over the valley around the town, with a backdrop of the gigantic northern Presidentials. You can see a fair distance up the valley into the Pinkham Notch itself. Across from the towering Presidentials, you observe the lower Carter Range, which contrasts the stark gray sharpness of the high peaks with its more green, rolling nature. By moving further along the ledge, you can see to the east, where you may spot Speckled Mountain.

Sightseeing

Definitely a must-see while visiting the Great North Woods! The Nansen Ski Jump was constructed in 1936-38 by the city of Berlin and the National Youth Administration in cooperation with the Nansen Ski Club. The jump is located just north of the Berlin city line, across from the Nansen Wayside Park. The ski jump has a 171 foot steel frame tower and supports a 310 foot runway. For almost fifty years this was the largest ski jump in the eastern United States and the foremost jump in the country. Nansen Ski Jump was the site of major championship ski jumping competitions for many decades. In 1938, the first Olympic trials were held at the Nansen Ski Jump and Milan hosted the United States Ski Jumping National Championships in 1940, ‘57, ‘65, ‘72. The jump was closed in 1988 and over the years this site became overgrown and dilapidated. In November 2011, a historical marker was placed to commemorate this ski jump and now an effort is underway to bring life back to this piece of New Hampshire's ski jumping history. The Nansen Ski Jump Restoration Project is currently underway with a goal of restoring the site so visitors can view it as it once was. It started with brush clearing work in 2015 and since then much of the area surrounding the jump and landing area has been cleared in order to restore the landscape. In the summer of 2016 a crew started to rebuild the hillside staircase leading up to the jump and work was done to expose the terraced seating area below the landing. The process of re-decking the jump began in December 2016 and will be completed in January. For project updates visit our Nansen Ski Jump Restoration Project webpage.

A 5 minute drive, has just about everything, and is almost always open! Seems to have replaced most of the "grocery" stores in the area. It's a Super Walmart...need we say more???

This place is awesome! One of our favorite destinations in the SxS. Ride the trails right from the Riverside Retreat (use Polaris Ride Command app). Think Kittery Trading Post, Cabellas, Bass Pro Shop, etc. but with way more personality and local flavor. Best place for outdoor gear in all of the Great North Woods...hands down! Firearms and ammo, camping/fishing gear, fishing licenses for NH and ME, quality outerwear, footwear, food, gas, and even a hardware store all in one place! The restaurant across the street is pretty cool too...I recommend the Bison "Moose Burger"!

Be Prepared...Dress Appropriately...Layer Up!

Northern New Hampshire has some of the most unpredictable weather in the world! Unpreparedness literally leads to loss of life up here, each and every year! Bring plenty of water and grab a snack! Dress in layers (think...moisture wicking and wind/waterproof) despite the current local weather, and be sure to keep your smartphone fully charged before venturing outdoors!
