Food Scene

Great neighborhood restaurant/Italian restaurant that has great food and a fun, family-friendly vibe. Whenever my daughters are in town, it's the first place we hit after we get home from the airport!

Heirloom has been around for a few years now and for very good reason! Their baked goods are amazing and it's really fun to watch them at their large prep table behind the counters. They also have sandwiches and some salads. Only about a half mile walk from the house.

This has been home to several restaurants and this is the latest. I actually have only had their food delivered (Postmates is the BEST), and loved it! Not super cheap, but not over the top either. I'd call it "fresh American cuisine."

The breakfasts here are seriously to die for. A great selection and terrific daily specials. If they have their screen porch pancakes, make sure you get them!

This place has got a great selection of crepes and they are all delicious. It's housed in an old building in the West Side, right next to WestSide Storey. Nice outside seating that's great for people watching.

Rated best BBQ in the country many times over and rightfully so. If you're on a day where they make burnt ends, you must get them! And their fries. And I love their "Kansas caviar" side. This original location is located in a gas station. Yup, a gas station. Be prepared to wait in line during busy times.

Drinks & Nightlife

This jazz club has great vintage vibe. Not a lot of snack options, but the cocktails are great and the price is right and there is never a cover charge. Open 365 days a year.

Arts & Culture

I am definitely prejudiced here. I am the exhibit director for the Library. We have two beautiful galleries with rotating exhibits housed in a turn-of-the-20th-century refurbished bank building. Great views from the rooftop terrace. The Library parking garage across the street has been featured endlessly on line for the book murals on the south side of the structure. Selfie-worthy, and it's on the streetcar route!

Beautiful views of the city from the grounds, and if you only do that it's worth it. Entrance fee is $16 or so, but it includes 2 days. There is a lot to see. It is the only World War I memorial in the United States.

Great for a jog or walk. You can feed the ducks and geese in the water feature and let the kids run off energy at the playground there. In season, the rose garden is stunning!

Shopping

Besides produce and local meat and dairy farmers, there is a flea market on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as specialty shops, music and a few scattered places for prepared deliciousness. Beignet is one of my favorites.

A well-curated selection of imported clothing and home goods. A Brookside staple that has been around for many, many years. Also along that strip is The Dime Store, an old-fashioned go-to store for the neighborhood. Once when we lost power for several days running, The Dime Store stayed open to sell batteries and flashlights.

They call themselves "the greatest store in the universe," and while that is probably not quite true, it's a fun store for KC centric goods and clothes. Hyper local and fun.

The West Side neighborhood is a great, arty couple of blocks close to downtown. WestSide Storey does have some antiques, but mostly cool KC centric stuff to take home to friends. Fun place to poke around.

Essentials

It's the classier of the two grocery stores in the 'hood. It's a bit pricier, but there's are decent organic and vegetarian selections, and the bakery is pretty darn good for a grocery store! Nice wines and spirits.
