Breakfast & Lunch. Remarkably well prepared food with carefully selected ingredients by veteran chefs formerly with the Patina Group. My favorites include: corn soto, avocado toast, and their breakfast combination (like an English breakfast). Co-Owner Xochil’s pastries, baked breads and burger buns are the best in town. They go fast. Everything on their well conceived menu is extraordinary with their focus on breakfast and burgers. You can't miss! $$ (626) 460-6030 cosandpi.com 8:00am to 4:00pm daily, closed Monday, closes 3:00pm on Sat (.7 miles, 14 mins walk)

This Restaurant has been non stop good since opening in 2014. I love everything I have eaten here. Bakery and Cafe: Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch. Before the restaurants above opened in recent years, this was my go to restaurant. I recommend menu items on the board and daily specials. There apple pie is the best I’ve tasted. Their hostess cupcake knockoff is the bomb! Their coffee is the best. The owner Sally is a very respected pastry chief and cook who I believe used to work at Zigat highly rated Shiro years ago. Indoor and nice covered outdoor dining areas. $$ 626) 441-0042 8:00am to 4:00pm daily, closes 3:00pm on Sat and Sun (1.5 miles, 30 mins walk) near the S. Pasadena Metro Gold Line

Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch I’ve been a customer of Nicole’s for over twenty years before she was even in S. Pasadena. Her market has too many yummy things that you’ll want to buy; however one should not miss her selection of French cheeses, one of the best in town. Lunch and Dinner. This is LA food celebrity Nancy Silverton’s ‘Roman’ style pizza joint. As one would expect it’s not your ordinary pizza. It begins with the dough which is already baked bare and then baked again with toppings such as mushroom, fennel, zucchini, salami, sausage, nettles, potato, and margarita sizer snipped to your size specifications and sold by the ounce. Jake’s find! It’s a speak easy type set up in reverse. Instead of liquor in the back it’s liquor in the front and the best sandwich in Highland Park according to my roommate Jake. Upon walking into the store you actually need to ask the cashier, "Do you sell birthday candles?" And then your allowed to enter the secret deli at the back of the store. Kinda like going to the Magic Castle. The sandwiches are impressively sized and are made of delicious ingredients such as "The Cure”, a sandwich with slow-roasted chicken, house-cured bacon, garlic-onion tomato sauce, white cheddar, mustard-paprika aioli, watercress. Gastropub. Lunch and Dinner. The problem with this place is that it will make you feel bad that it isn’t in your neighborhood. Diverse and inclusive. Excellent locally crafted beer on premises and excellent guest beers that are projected on a high school style overhead projector. Beers get crossed off as they sell out for the night. At the top of Mount Hollywood, 360-degree views of everything from the Verdugo Mountains to the Pacific Ocean (on a rare, smog-free day) offer a bird’s-eye crash course on L.A. geography.  It’s an ideal vantage point for checking out sweeping views of the Los Angeles basin, the edge of the San Fernando Valley, the hazy hills to the west, the skyline of Downtown Los Angeles with the Observatory in the foreground, and the money shot: a close-up of the Hollywood sign Hours: From 5am-10:30pm. Hiking trails close at sunset. Parking: Snag a spot in the lot next to the Griffith Observatory. If that lot is too hectic, look for street parking along Observatory Avenue. Length: ~3 miles Time: 90 mins

A Big Hike! If all of the trails above seem too tame, there's always the hike from Sierra Madre's Chantry Flat to Mt. Wilson, which is a punishing but beautiful trail about 7 miles up with a 4,200-foot gain in elevation. Lots of people do this hike as conditioning, to work up to bigger peaks. The 5,710 foot summit is home for an observatory responsible for the most detailed photos of Mars. While the summit is steeped in astronomical wonder and tremendous views of Los Angeles, the trails are the real beauty of this hike. Gear: Good hiking boots, Trekking poles, Daypack with 3L of water (you can refill at the summit), Sunscreen, Extra Layers, Insect repellant (the bugs can be bad at points),

It’s 3 mile hike to Henninger Flats, where there is a campground, visitor center, and tree nursery operated by the LA County Fire Department. A perfect location for a mid-day picnic or an overnight escape. The hike to Henninger Flats is 6 miles round trip with 1,325 feet of elevation change. If you want to go farther you can extend the hike a bit farther up Mount Wilson Toll Road to a loop road to a helipad on the ridge above Henninger Flats, gaining broader views on an 8.7-mile round trip hike with 1,700 feet of elevation change. (I’ve taken the Toll Road Trail all the way up to Mt. Wilson plan 8 hrs to do this). Time: 2-3 hrs. Moderate. Gear: Map, Lt. weight hiking boots, , 3L of water.

This loop hike starts at Icehouse Canyon, climbs to Icehouse Saddle, then hits Timber Mountain (elevation 8,303ft), Telegraph Peak (elevation 8,985ft), and Thunder Mountain (elevation 8,587ft), and then descends down to Baldy Notch, Manker Flats, and back to Icehouse Canyon. It’s a long hike, but a favorite for those avoiding crowds. This is a long, tough hike. Start very early to avoid the heat in summer. Likewise, if there’s snow and ice on the route, don’t attempt it unless you have winter hiking and mountaineering experience.
