Taughannock Falls carves a 400-foot gorge through layers of sandstone, shale and limestone that were once the bed of an ancient sea. With a 215-foot plunge, this waterfall stands three stories taller than Niagara Falls! Enjoy swimming in Cayuga Lake, a picnic area, concessions, a playground, camping, and more! There is a marina offering parking for 25 rigs, a concession stand, and a protected harbor. Please go to the NY State Parks website for the most up-to-date notices of any park closures and to confirm if swimming is currently open. You can either drive a couple miles North on Route 89 to get to the front entrance of the park to walk to the bottom of the Falls (the closest you can get to the Falls!) or take The Black Diamond Trail from our house and bike/walk/run 3.5 miles north to the top of the Falls. From there you can take the Rim Trail down to the park entrance. If you're looking for a beach to swim in the lake, head over to the Eastern lake side of the park. Lifeguarded swimming in Cayuga Lake is available seasonally but check the park website to see if swimming is available the day you are interested in going. Dogs are allowed on leash. There is a car parking fee seasonally, which is valid all day at all state parks. There are multiple hiking trails that provide views of the fall and the gorge. The rock beds can be slippery, so if you do choose to walk through the shallower areas to cool off, please use caution. Water shoes with bottoms that grip are recommended. Gorge Trail: 0.95 miles along Taughannock Creek to the base of the falls. Easy South Rim Trail: 1.60 miles Moderate North Rim Trail: 1.44 miles. Moderate Gorge Trail and the falls overlook are open year-round, but the other trails are open from April through October. Follow Route 89 north to Taughannock Falls State Park, a few minutes drive from our house. The gorge and hiking trails are on your left. For an easily accessible view, drive past the park entrance and turn left on Taughannock Park Road, follow the signs to the Overlook. There are restroom facilities and a visitor center at the Overlook.

Buttermilk Falls State Park takes its name from the foaming cascade formed by Buttermilk Creek as it flows down the steep valley side toward Cayuga Lake. There is a beautiful natural swimming pool at the beginning of the trail that is a perfect summer spot for a picnic or cooling off before/after your hike. The hike itself is for the more advanced, as it begins with what may seem like an endless set of stairs, but don't let that scare you! You don't want to miss this spot. Reward yourself at the top by plunging into one of many swimming holes eroded by the flowing water.

If you're heading toward Seneca Lake, don't miss Watkins Glen! This park has a reputation for leaving visitors spellbound. Within two miles, the glen's stream descends 400 feet past 200-foot cliffs, generating 19 waterfalls along its course. After your hike in the park, there are some delicious restaurants, ice cream spots, and shopping in town on Main Street. The 25-30 minute drive to Watkins from our house is a very straightforward and scenic one!

This is one of our favorite local parks. Winding trails follow the gorge past 12 waterfalls, including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, to where visitors can see a mile-and-a-half down the wooded gorge. Either start at the lower entrance where you can walk the entire length of the park (about 5-6 miles in total), or go the second far entrance and make a smaller loop (about 2 miles total) that brings you right to the gorges. The far entrance walk begins at an old mill. There is also a natural swimming pool at the lower entrance with a lifeguard. Dogs are allowed on the trails, but not in the swimming area.

You can pick up the Water Front Trail from here to walk along the lake. If you brought your furry friend with you, don't miss the awesome dog park behind the Hangar Theater. Take a left at the Hangar when driving South on 89 and you won't miss it. It offers both a big and little dog side so all pups can enjoy! You can also walk to The Children's Garden, enjoy the public pool, skating rink, and marina.

Located off to the North side of Taughannock State Park in Trumansburg, NY. Rice Hill is a great hill for wintertime sledding. It also has two ponds for ice skating and a warming hut with wood stove. The hill is fairly long which leads to great sledding runs. There are also several "Multi-use trails" that allow for snow shoeing, hiking or cross-country skiing. You can get to Rice Hill either by way of Route 89 or Route 96. Just follow signs for Taughannock Falls State Park.

The Cayuga Nature Center provides indoor and outdoor programs and exhibits that encourage visitors to explore and understand the natural history of local and global ecosystems. The Nature Center’s 100 acres of woodland and old field overlooking Cayuga Lake are home to a six-story treehouse, live native animals, a gorge and waterfall, and more than 5 miles of walking trails. The historic main lodge, built by the WPA in 1939, houses the largest public aquarium in the Finger Lakes – highlighting the fish life of Cayuga Lake past and present – as well as exhibits on local forest ecology, wildlife, and climate. The Nature Center was founded in 1981 to provide nature education opportunities to area youth, principally through summer camps. In 2013 it merged with the Paleontological Research Institution and expanded its onsite exhibits and programs.

Really good Thai food, simple as that. The pad thai is perfection, but you can't leave without trying their Tom Yum coconut soup, which we lovingly call "crack soup" for a reason. They even have a separate gluten-free/vegetarian/vegan menu (get the gnocchi with extra grilled vegetables and Gardein chick'n!). Their minestrone soup is the best we've ever had and their Tuscan white bean dip is one of our favorite things ever. They also have a bar with a wide array of cocktails. www.ciaoithaca.com
If you're having too good of a time to leave the suite (we get it...it's awesome in there) order food to be delivered right to the suite with Ithaca To Go, our local Grub Hub-esque take out company. Choose from dozens of local spots for delivery right to you. Just be forewarned: There is a $10 delivery fee in addition to the driver's tip, and many restaurants have a minimum order requirement, so be prepared to spend a little extra. It generally takes 45 minutes to an hour from the time you order for the food to arrive here. Totally worth it though for when you're just not in the mood to go out! Make a note at checkout for delivery to go to the suite, not our front door. www.ithacatogo.com

After 14 years in the Finger Lakes wine industry, we land ourselves in Tompkins County in a single location with production, sales and tasting under one roof. Our new home - 10 minutes north of Ithaca - has a four+ acre vineyard planted with red vinifera grape varieties. The functional tasting area reflects our passion for food & wine, best experienced in our Wine & Food Pairing and selection of cheeses, sausages, and snacks. And we keep it simple; we grow high quality fruit and source more from other Finger Lake vineyards and carefully guide the grapes through fermentation, aging and bottling. The result is fruit-forward wines with complexity and lengthy finish. We invite you to visit The Big Blue Barn, taste our wines, engage in conversation and relax. Salud! Nancy Tisch, Founder and Winemaker.

Hopshire Farm & Brewery is operated as a family-owned business. They have combined our belief in New York agriculture, local foods, and great beer into a brewery that will use as many local ingredients as possible to produce high-quality beers of several styles. During the 19th century, New York was the primary hop producer in America. Hops were grown on family farms in small plots. Beer is one of the oldest and most natural products humans have ever made. The process of brewing beer is simple and organic. The Hopshire goal is to connect our customers with the ingredients in their beer and demonstrate the brewing process. Of course, the beers will use New York hops but also look for locally grown cherries, raspberries, honey, maple syrup, and other ingredients to be featured in the beers. DRINK GLOBAL, BREW LOCAL.
