This is the only place where you can see a takahe, the bird once considered extinct, but was re-discovered in the mountains on the other side of Lake Te Anau. It's a nice45min walk from town or 1/2hr from DOC office.

You can see NZ native birds such as Takahe and Kaka. The winter feeding time is 10:30am every morning. Free entry. Gold coin donation ($1 or $2).
