This short roadside loop meanders around a flat on the banks of the Smith River. At one time it was the most popular trail in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, but in 2011 the trailhead was moved from a very visible location on the side of Highway 199 to a well-hidden location on nearby Walker Road. Two small signs at the old Highway 199 pullout redirect visitors to Walker Road, but the new trailhead is currently unmarked. As a result, although the trail is still popular, it’s much less-used than before. It’s also more enjoyable now that it doesn’t start and end at the busy highway. Simpson-Reed Trail is a must-see location for visitors to Crescent City.

The Simpson-Reed trail has an unusually dense jungle like look, with greenery covering almost every available surface. Simpson Reed also has an unusually large number of different kinds of plants.

THE HIKE: A double-loop of slightly less than a mile. Take a right at the first fork, then another right onto Peterson Memorial Trail, which eventually rejoins Simpson-Reed loop as it circles counter-clockwise back to the starting point. SWEAT LEVEL: The trail is level, smooth and short GETTING THERE: Park along the well-marked turnouts along highway 199, just 3 miles east of highway 101.
