For anyone interested in ancient history, the whole Kilmartin area is an excellent place to visit. This valley in Argyll has many standing stones, burial chambers/souterrains, hill forts and other interesting archaeogical features along with a fantastic museum to help you learn more about the area's history. Kilmartin is about a three and a half hour drive from Eddleston, so would be a good stopping point for wider travels across Scotland.

The area spans 5000 years of history, with a multitude of cairns, standing stones, carved rock, stone circles, forts and castles. Kilmartin Glen has the highest concentration of ancient sites in the British Isles.

Kilmartin Glen is located between Oban and Lochgilphead, surrounding the village of Kilmartin, on the west of Scotland. The area spans 5,000 years with a multitude of cairns, standing stones, carved rock, stone circles, forts and castles. Kilmartin Glen is considered to have one of the most important concentrations of Neolithic and Bronze Age remains in Scotland. There are more than 350 ancient monuments within a six mile radius of the village, with 150 of them being prehistoric. Monuments include standing stones, a henge monument, numerous cists, and a ‘linear cemetery’ comprising five burial cairns. Several of these, as well as many natural rocks, are decorated with cup and ring marks.
