The Neratze mosque and next to it the Minaret tower from the Turkish occupation on the road Em. Vernadou 2. Behind you will find Mikrasiaton Square to sit and relax. During the Venetian times the Mosque "Neratzes" used to be a church named ‘Santa Maria'', dedicated to the Mary of Augustans. The little chapel on its west side was dedicated to the body of Christ. In 1657, the Turks turned the temple into a mosque named ‘Gazi Housein" or "Neratze", which also served as an Ottoman seminary. In 1890, the mechanic G. Daskalakis added a large minaret with two stone-made balconies to the building. Today the Mosque "Neratzes" is used as a conservatoire.

The Neratze Mosque in Rethymno, also known as Gazi Hussein Mosque, is found close to Petichaki square. Initially it was a Venetian church dedicated to Santa Maria and later on, it became an Augustinian Monastery. However, when the Turks dominated the town in 1657, their leader, Gazi Hussein Pasha, turned it into a mosque.
The tallest mosque and probably the one that is best preserved in the island of Crete is the Neratze mosque. Right next to the mosque you will find many places where you can sit at night and try local raki.
Found near the center of town and easily recognized by its 27-meter-high minaret, is the Neratze Mosque, dating from 1600. No longer functioning as a religious building, it now hosts musical concerts. It is not open for tours, but be sure to have a look at the main doorway as you walk by. Out front is a large courtyard, and around the side you'll find pleasant cafés in the shadow of the walls.
