The Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, located northwest from Madrid is a monastery, basilica, royal palace, pantheon of the Kings and Queens of Spain, museum, etc. UNESCO declared it World Heritage Site in 1984. You may easily reach this location by train or by bus. El Escorial is also renowned for its restaurants.

A World Heritage Site. In this monastery is were all the Spanish kings since Philip II have been buried. Impressive scenery and ideal for a day trip from Madrid.

a nice visit if you want to see something outside of the city. It's about one hour by Cercanias Trains from Atocha Central Station.
