National park. The scenery around Skaftafell is full of stark contrasts. The various glacial tongues are flanked by jagged mountains, with the glacier-topped peak of Hvannadalshnjúkur rising highest.

Skaftafell is part of Vatnajökull national park. The area is magnificent with numerous outlet glaciers, beautiful waterfalls and scenic views. Here is a great variety of hiking trails from easy family friendly hikes to more strenuous hikes. Recommendations: Hike up to Svartifoss waterfall, Sjónarnípa trail and Kristínartindar trail. There are also great options to go on glacier hikes and ice-climbing trips on the outlet glacier in the park, incredible landscapes and beautiful scenes. We would recommend Icelandic Mountain Guides.

Great place for hikes, Skaftafell visitor center has great maps of the possible hikes, anything from 50 min walk up to day hikes. There are several company´s offering glacier walks from this area on Falljökull glacier. We recomend Localguide.is, discount code: VATNAJOKULL for 10% off
