Conveniently located in the centre of Blakeney (a few moments walk to village shop, church, fish and chips, post office and of course nearby local pub), Arch Cottage is just a stone’s throw from the ancient Forest of Dean. Enjoy a picnic and a paddle by Blakeney Straits stream in Wenchford, take a stroll or paddle around scenic Mallards Pike lake or picturesque Cannop Ponds. Visit Beechenhurst for a walk around the famous Sculpture Trail, a cycle along the bike trails, scale up the climbing tower or just enjoy a relaxing drink or gorgeous afternoon tea at the famous Speech House hotel. Cycle hire is available from several places within the forest and there are trails for all abilities including challenging downhill MTB routes. (Electric bike hire could be a great choice if you’re less practiced on the hills!) There is a solid bike rack fitted at the front of the cottage for your convenience if you bring your own bikes. (Remember to bring bike locks to secure them to the rack.) Step back into forest history at the Dean Heritage Centre, Clearwell Caves, Littledean Jail or Hopewell Colliery. For more architectural history, choose from St Briavels Castle, Tintern Abbey, Chepstow Castle or the magnificent Gloucester Cathedral. Other local attractions include Dean Forest Railway and Perrygrove railways (which have great themed events all year round), mysterious Puzzlewood, exciting Go Ape! and also the National Diving and Activity Centre near Chepstow. The Forest has been an important location choice in lots of TV and film productions (such as Sex Education and Star Wars), so you can follow a filming trail or search out where JRR Tolkien and JK Rowling found inspiration for their works. Blakeney village is conveniently located to provide the perfect starting point for all that the Forest has to offer and also for those wanting to explore further afield (if you can actually drag yourselves away!) The Wye Valley (great for canoeing), Gloucester (with its beautiful cathedral) , the Cotswolds, Herefordshire, South Wales and the ancient city of Bath are all within an hour’s drive. A large local area map is on the wall to help you plan your days in the Forest and a selection of local maps and walking books are available to use during your stay.

Forest of Dean Mountain Bike Park: Forest of Dean is a geographical, historical and cultural region in the western part of the county of Gloucestershire, England. The forest is a roughly triangular plateau bounded by the River Wye to the west and north, the River Severn to the south, and the City of Gloucestershire to the east.
