Take a stroll through the oldest social housing community in the world founded by the rich merchants of Augsburg called the Fuggers who were financiers of emperors and as influential as the Medici in Florence. Small entrance fee. Still inhabited. Also has a commendable restaurant that serves tapas sized Bavarian dishes.
The Fuggerei is the world’s oldest social housing complex still in use. It is a walled enclave within the city of Augsburg. It takes its name from the Fugger family and was founded in 1516 by Jakob Fugger the Younger as a place where the needy citizens of Augsburg could be housed.
