Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is known for it's huge dunes and for the seasonal Medano Creek and beach created at the base of the dunes.

Great day trip. Check the weather conditions to determine best time of day to go. Note in the summer it's best to go early morning or very late in the day as the sand can get very hot. You can rent sandboards at three local concessioners. The Oasis Store is immediately outside the park. There’s also Kristi Mountain Sports in Alamosa, which rents boards as long as the sand isn’t frozen. Also, Sand Dunes Recreation in Hooper rents boards, plus you can go for a soak in their hot springs when you go to return them!

The main attraction - The Great Sand Dunes national park. Beautiful views - and some great hikes. Mosca pass trail is a great longer hike, but hiking around the dunes is great too...

The name speaks for itself; nestled at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo range, this national park is one of the San Luis Valley's big attractions. The possibilities are endless, but one of our favorite things to do is rent a sandboard and surf the dunes! If you happen to visit during the spring or early summer, the creek at the base of the dunes might be running, so be sure to bring a bathing suit and towel! Also, check out the great programming offered to visitors, including nature tours, stargazing, etc.
