Penisarwaun is a very peaceful village just outside of Llanberis which is where the house is located. You can go for walks down the little lanes or up past the play ground and through the fields which is where this photo is taken from. If you have dogs please keep them on the lead through the fields as animals will be grazing. We do not have a shop in the village but Beran Garage is just up the lane on the main road or Llanrug village has a good Co-op, butchers, post office and a decent pub called the Glyntwrog. Caban Cafe in Brynrefail is a great place for lunch and breakfast with outdoor decking area with wooden huts, it serves lovely fresh food, homemade cakes and coffee. It’s worth walking down from the cafe to the Penllyn to take in the stunning scenery of the lake.

Dinorwic quarry is a large former slate quarry, now home to the National Slate Museum and is a world heritage site. At its height at the turn of the century, it was the second largest slate quarry in Wales, after the neighbouring Penrhyn quarry near Bethesda. The quarry is full of history with interesting derelict buildings, tools and machinery from when it was open. From the quarry you will see the most spectacular views of Snowdon, Llanberis and all the way to the coast. It is definitely worth exploring and is a fantastic area for rock climbing.

Llanberis village at the foot of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) is a five minute drive from the house. It’s where you want to go if you are planning a trip on the train up Snowdon or want to walk up and explore the mountain ranges. If you are planning a trip on the train you will need to book in advance as it’s very popular. Padarn lake is a great place to go kayaking and paddle boarding. There is a shop across the road from the pontoon where you can hire all the equipment needed. There is also a good cafe called the Lone Tree. Llanberis has some beautiful walks, ancient woodland, a waterfall and a small Welsh castle called Dolbadarn .There is a steam train that takes you alongside the lake and also a boat that runs during the summer months. The Quarry hospital and Slate museum are interesting places to visit full of information on the history of the area slate mining. If you’re lucky you might see the wild goats that roam the area. Llanberis has some nice little places to eat and a few shops. Melyn Bakery, Pantri and Llygaid yr Haul are great cafes. Melyn is open in the evening, it serves Meze platters and great cocktails. Peak Restaurant is a lovely restaurant serving fresh, locally sourced produce. Heights and Pizza and Pint are decent pub that serve good food and drinks. The Victoria Hotel has a nice beer garden. The Indian restaurant and takeaway serves good food, you can take your own alcohol which makes it a cheaper option. The Fricasan sells good takeaway pizza, it’s a very chilled out place where locals hang out around the fire pit. There are two tasty takeaway vans. One selling large Mexican Burritos and a Thai which is really good. All freshly made to order.

Sightseeing

Yr Wyddfa is the highest mountain in Wales, at an elevation of 1,085 metres above sea level, and the highest point in the British Isles outside the Scottish Highlands. You can take many routes up depending on your level of mountaineering but be aware that the weather can change quickly and can be very different at the top so make sure you take appropriate clothing / equipment. Once at the top the views are spectacular and on a clear day it is possible to see Ireland. During the summer months the steam train runs up Snowdon and takes you to the top to the cafe. This is a very popular tourist attraction so make sure you book well in advance.

Dinas Dinlle is the nearest beach (13 miles) . It is very beautiful when the tide is out but not so great when all the way in as it’s all pebble and not very good for walking, it’s worth checking the tide time first. The beach has a couple of cafes and a chip shop and also the air museum with cafe which is good for watching planes and helicopters take off and land.

Llanddwyn (Newborough) is one of our best beaches and is a stunning walk to Llanddwyn Island with views of Snowdonia mountain range. Llanddwyn island is very magical and historic. The name Llanddwyn means "The church of St. Dwynwen". She is the Welsh patron saint of lovers, making her the Welsh equivalent of St. Valentine. Her feast day, 25 January, is often celebrated by the Welsh with cards and flowers, just as is 14 February for St. Valentine.

Rhosneigr is a very busy village on the waterfront and has some nice shops and places to eat. The main beach is a great place for boats and water sports. Kitesurfing, windsurfing, paddle boarding and surfing are all very popular with Fun Sport Shop offering lessons. The instructors do get very busy during the school holidays so it’s worth booking in advance. The shop also sells all the kit and clothes and has a good cafe upstairs overlooking the beach. Nant Gwrtheyrn was an abandoned village in the 1970s following the closure of the quarries. The redundant houses, offices, chapel and shops constructed during the quarry’s heyday between 1860 and 1920,when over 2,000 men worked the granite, had fallen into ruin. A huge renovation project took place to restore the old buildings and land. It is now home to the National Welsh Language and Heritage Centre. It is a magical place with a very dramatic drive down. There is a nice cafe and walk down to the beach where on a quiet day you are most likely to see seals. There is an interesting Welsh tale to Nant Gwrtheyrn of Rhys and Meinir, a tragic love story on their wedding day where Meinir is lost in an old Oak Tree and is only discovered when lightning hits.
