The bustling port of Dartmouth is a great day out and can be reached by car, passenger ferry (from Totnes), car ferry's (there are two) steam train (from Paignton; book with the Dartmouth Steam Railway Co) or on foot via the coastal path. Dartmouth is simply stunning and will be a memorable day out from your holiday. Dartmouth really has some thing for everyone great shopping a mix of independent shops, a man creche (a pub) cafes and restaurants, even a castle! (check out the English Heritage webiste). Don't forget to try the local seafood and sample the catch of the day or just fish and chips (Rockfish takeaway is one of the most places popular) and sit on the quay and take in the hustle and bustle of the river ferry's and passing yachts. For the kids they will enjoy the lovely park just back from the promenade, also make sure you pick up a crab line, bait and a bucket from one of the many shops and take part in some crabbing it will keep them happy for hours. Dogs will enjoy a dip in nearby Warfleet Creek or a walk up to Sugary Cove for a swim.

Shaldon is a stunning village on the opposite side of Teignmouth at the mouth of the river Teign well known for its stunning Georgian architecture its really well worth a drive over to soend a day here. Parking is recommended on the outskirts of the village in peak season, try using the car park on the Shoreside development (first right when you come over the bridge from the Teignmouth side) or the larger car park at the Ness headland. Once there spend some time on the sandy main beach, visit Shaldon Zoo, play pitch and putt, go through the scary Smugglers tunnel to discover the stunning Ness Cove beach if that isnt enough to keep you busy then you can also take the ferry across to Teignmouth the small ferry departs directly from the middle Shaldon Beach. Located close to Paignton on the South Devon coast, Goodrington has everything your family needs for a traditional seaside holiday. Goodrington beach is divided into two parts, the North Beach and the South Beach. If you’re bringing the dog, you can walk him any time on the North Beach. However, between the months of May and September, dogs are banned from the South Beach. In either case, there is a strict anti dog-fouling regime on both Goodrington beach and the adjacent park, so make sure you pack your doggie bags! Goodrington Beach has won a prestigious Blue Flag Award for cleanliness, so it’s safe for kids of all ages. The beach is kept clean and hazard-free by daily raking with a tractor that gets rid of stones, pebbles and seaweed. Safety is also a priority, with a designated safe bathing area and lifeguards in attendance during the summer months. The waters in this area are shallow, so toddlers and young kids can get wet without parents worrying. At low tide, you can find loads of rock pools for little ones to explore. Goodrington Park is within walking distance of the beach, where you can spend some time mucking about on the boating lake, race in go-karts, play crazy golf or get clued up on the local environment with a visit to The Seashore Centre. If you want to explore the region a little further, then hop aboard the steam train that follows the coastline from Paignton to Dartmouth.

Close to Paignton is Elberry Cove, a small inlet with a small pebble beach. Far from the bustle of the main beaches, so you can relax without being disturbed by noisy crowds or amusement arcades. This is the designated beach for water skiing, so no swimming in the ski lane. The beach can only be accessed on foot, so if you have the car with you, park at Broadsands and take a stroll along the coastal path. The scenery at Elberry Cove is beautiful; it’s framed by wooded hillsides and the sea is crystal clear and safe to swim in. At one end of the beach you’ll find the remains of Lord Churston’s bathhouse, a romantic 18th century ruin. The building was once three storeys, with a thatched roof and a ground floor that would flood when the tide came in. This meant that Lord Churston and his guests could swim straight out into the sea through a gated doorway. The building also boasted an early version of a hot tub, with a fire heating up the seawater to warm swimmers after their dip. Elberry Cove was one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Her holiday home at Greenway is not far away, and the cove even features in one of her novels, The ABC Murders, as the setting of Sir Carmichael Clarke’s untimely death. You'll find Elberry Cove on the Agatha Christie Literary Trail. Type: Rocky with shingle Access: Not easy with a long uneven path steps and shingle beach. Dogs are welcome all year round.

You'll find Elberry Cove on the Agatha Christie Literary Trail. Type: Rocky with shingle Access: Not easy with a long uneven path steps and shingle beach. Dogs are welcome all year round.
Great place to explore on a wet day, free to get in too although you may wish to make a donation. Why not take the train along the coast from Newton Abbot to Exeter Central station (the museum is very close to the train station) and take in the sights of the Teign and Exe Estuary on the way, you could even stop at the beach on the way home.

Castle Drogo is situated high above the Teign Gorge. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for self-made millionaire Julius Drewe. It looks ancient, but this remarkable building was only constructed 100 years ago, the last castle ever built in England. From the beginning it has suffered from water penetration and has for the last 8 years been undergoing a conservation project to make the Castle watertight. As the building work comes to an end the interior of the castle has been redisplayed after years in storage. Once reopened, you can explore the castles refreshed layout, discover its precious treasures, fascinating stories, and unique history. Outside the castle, stroll around the formal gardens, alive with colour throughout the seasons. Or explore the Teign Valley with its ancient gorge, teeming with wildlife. There’s a variety of routes to suit all abilities. No visit is complete without a stop to recharge in the café, serving traditional Devon cream teas and many more seasonal and locally sourced options.

The village of Stoke Gabriel, South Devon, is situated on a creek of the River Dart and is a quintessential English Village. Steeped in history and surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the green rolling hills of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Quay is the perfect place for children to go crabbing, lines, bait and buckets can be bought at the village store and the river shack often have spare containers to be used instead of buckets around takeaway hut, so don't worry if you forget your! There are beautiful walks along the riverbank, two public houses (the Church House Inn and the Castle Inn) and a riverside cafe to enjoy, not to mention the old apple orchard and winding streets of the village. From the quay area take a stroll along the shores of the Mill pond and you will come across a gateway into the apple orchard (next to the church) which has a super little play area, a must stop for visiting children. The mill pond (the saltwater lake linked to the Dart) is tidal so at high tide the more adventurous can crab, swim, paddleboard straight from the quay into the river below. At low tide (pictured) you have the option of the mill pond which is usually lined with children crabbing. After all this fun why not enjoy refreshments from the River Shack cafe behind and take in the stunning scenery. The village is popular with locals and holiday makers and can get busy in peak season, a good tip (for those able to walk up the hill) would be to park on the outskirts of the village and take the short walk down to the centre of the village as parking on the quay (postcode TQ9 6RD) is not guaranteed as and is chargeable. The church house Inn postcode TQ9 6RX also has a car park too.

A beautiful spot, Thurlestone Beach is made up of two main beaches - the smaller one is next to the Golf Club while the larger beach is slightly further along the coast towards South Milton (South Milton Sands - see e guide) Both beaches are sheltered and the waters are shallow enough for the kids to splash about in. Ultimately, Thurlestone is the perfect beach if you want to enjoy a little slice of South Devon without the noise and bustle of the usual summer crowds.

Kents Cavern is a must for a visit to Torbay, fantastic experience for all the family and the best thing is it doesnt matter what the weather outside is doing when youre underground! Kents Cavern is one of the most important Stone Age sites in Europe and one of Britain’s best showcaves. The cave used to be home to ancient humans who sheltered here from the extreme weather, making fires, shaping tools and hunting Ice Age animals! You can come here and walk through the extensive labyrinth of caverns and be completely surrounded by rocks that are around 400 million years old. As well as this, you will be able to admire the hundreds of stalagmites and stalactites that don the cave walls. This is one of Devon’s most interesting attractions. My children particularly enjoyed this around the age of 7-8 when they covered the topic of the Stone Age at school, this was a perfect experience to bring their learning to life. Nice cafe and little gift shop to end your visit plus an outdoor area including ice age woodland trail. Parking available on site £3 - cash/card taken but if full there is free on street parking available close by.

One of the most idyllic settings, Greenaway was once the home of the famous novelist Agatha Christie. It stands in a commanding position high above the banks of the scenic river Dart. This stunning National Trust House and gardens is a must for those with NT membership, it may even be worth getting it in advance of your holiday too.

Cinema

A cinema with a difference! enjoy watching a great film in a 14th century barn set within the medieval courtyard of Dartington Hall. The cinema is intimate and cosy and in my opinion definately beats any of the larger more commercial cinemas! the barn cinema cafe bar serves sweets, popcorn and refreshments. Locals tip: Dartington and the Cider Press Centre (also on the estate) has shops, cafe/restaurants and a pub on site the White hart Inn at Dartington hall is one of the closest. Check opening times and try and tie in a drink or a meal at one of these to make the most of your visit.
