For a taste of Northumberland's history and mining heritage try a visit to Woodhorn - Museum and Northumberland Archives, near Ashington. Woodhorn is based in original colliery buildings with a new museum housing interactive displays that paint a picture of life in this former mining community.

Woodhorn Museum is a ten minute drive away and is a fascinating place to visit. It tells the history of coal mining in the area and has original buildings to look around. It also houses a gallery showing, amongst other things, the paintings that the miners used to paint in their spare time. There is a cafe and gift shop. As locals we go regularly and it’s a lovely place to spend two or three hours.

Fascinating museum on the industrial heritage of the North. Regular touring exhibits. Interesting collection of paintings by the Pitman Painters.
