It's an hour and a half away, but the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway drive makes the drive part of the experience. We drive in through Weaverville and back through Burnsville to make the most of the drive. The Deep Gap trail is challenging and very scenic, and the Summit loop is more relaxed. The picnic area is idyllic. The highest peaks east of the Mississippi!

The highest peak East of the Mississippi! Beautiful views, and hikes for all comfort levels. Bring a picnic (no food up there).

Mt Mitchell’s summit is the highest point east of the Mississippi at 6,684 feet. From its observation deck see the spruce-fir forest of Mt Mitchell State Park. Its trails allow you to explore with short hikes near the summit and challenging treks leading to adjacent wilderness areas.

Highest Peak East of the Mississippi! An hour from Asheville on a beautiful drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Hope for sun up high and bring layers! NOTE * Can be inaccessible in winter if Parkway is closed up high for ice in tunnels
